  1. After 2 years Iam still in love with it, I won't buy new one now I'd probably wait for Canon 1DX mk2 to get cheaper on 2nd hand market until then I still do low budget music videos so the money is tight can't afford yet to get bigger better..at the end for normal people's eyes it's the story, framing, lighting that really matters not pixel peeps. here's my latest video shot in London with NX1

    GH5 to Alexa Conversion

Here are side by side Log shots (matched exposure & white balance) converted with a film conversion software that is supposed to match Kodak 5213. These should be identical - GH5 V-Log to the software's Kodak 5213: Alexa LogC to the software's Kodak 5213: Now, GH5 V-Log converted to GHa LogC, and then to the software's Kodak 5213: And last, an idea of what the Kodak 5213 conversion is supposed to look like, from the software's website:

  3. Your last statement is probably correct. I don't know about cheap down the road. Well yeah it will be amazing tech. But as we see now already even lower end compnay's like Panasonic, Olympus, heck even Blackmagic are pushing up the price for cameras we would like to have in this last cycle. I really don't want to be paying 4000 bucks for a Panny or Sony mirrorless to be honest I don't care what it can do. Unless you are making a good living shooting 2 thousand bucks is about all a person can do, and with all the other stuff you need on top of it that is probably most peoples limit or more. It is pretty amazing what you can do with a iPhone let alone say a used Panny G7 or something like it. So I am not complaining, but this new trend Olympus started by going to 2000 bucks Ain't to my liking as they say.

    G85 my next step?

Your link is to the plain adapter, not a speedbooster. A plain adapter simply mounts the lens to the camera at the correct distance from the sensor, and does nothing to change/compensate for the smaller sensor size. It has no optical elements, basically just a tube with your camera's mount on one end and the lens mount on the other. You can get decent plain adapters for much less than Metabones' versions, however... Fotodiox is decent and usually around $20. The Ultra is the newest Metabones booster in the .71x strength. This will take the G85 sensor up to about the size of your Nikon (actually slightly larger in 1080p, and slightly smaller in 4K, but very close). The first .71x Metabones booster is a little less sharp than the Ultra, and has a touch more vignetting and corner softness, but is still miles better than any of the imitators IMO. Better build, aperture ring, less flaring, etc. This is the version you can usually find used for around $250. Same power/magnification as the Ultra. The XL .64x is a little bit stronger power/magnification, and will take your effective sensor size up to around APS-H (1.3x) crop. Which is great but at this point many lenses designed for APS-C (like possibly your Tamron) will vignette, as they aren't designed to cover that large of a sensor. So your best bet is to stay with one of the .71x models.

  5. You forgot to add that it would Only cost about $1,000.00 instead of $15,000.00 it would probably cost to build it LoL. Everyone in the world would buy that camera if it was 2 grand! It would look like a Apple iPhone roll out with people camping in tents 4 days ahead of the launch outside of a Panasonic store.

  6. I can confirm that 5d iv 4k is almost identical to the 1dx ii and 1dc 4k. Just have that heavy crop

  7. better at what? ultra low light, well that is nothing Godfather or other Bmovies were shot at. Not even the King of Darkness, Gordon Willis shot at ultra low light. Panasonic is not late at all. All their video orientated DSLMs have been top notch. GH5 will show less artefacts in low light but more noise. Which of the two looks more "filmic"? I say, noise over artefacts any time.

  8. @Dustin just FYI if you go with the Nikon Speedbooster/Lens Turbo/Adapter be aware that you have to manually choose the focal length for IBIS to work since you don't have any electronic communication with the body.

  9. I wasn't aware of this camera...let me look it up! Edit: just looked it up and I still think I'd rather give the G85 a go. Im just a cheapie when it comes to cameras as again this is strictly a hobby and I'm not making a living doing this. My manfrotto mini tripod stick thing comes today so I'll give that a go on the d5300 and see if it doesn't at least help the shake when shooting handheld. But none the less there are plenty of capable cameras out there so it seems!

    Garbage Can Audio

It's also a pretty shitty mic. I use it for my VO but have to record under a blanket + carpet and process the hell out of it in audition. Still ends up sounding off, lacking bass and with this weird reverb, though I get tons of comments about having a great ASMR voice. :P

  11. I honestly believe we'll see cameras like this on the market in the next 5-10 years, and by then everyone will not only take it for granted but still be moaning over perceived shortcomings, pixel peeping into imperceptible problems with the 6k 120fps Raw, and wishing for smaller/larger/more ergonomic/more feature packed/more minimalist form factors at lower prices. And instead of 'everyone in the world' queuing up to buy it, it will still only be a relatively small amount of people on these forums who actually care that much.

  12. @Dustin good deal. I would still go with the G85 if I were you. Wait a month and save the little extra. I have seen some new other G85 cameras go for less than $700. Plus the extra wait of the G85 will help a little with stabilization. Also, make sure you get the version 2 of the Lens Turbo... supposedly it’s a lot better and they’re still pretty cheap at $150. Also if you do consider going with native lenses, I’ve used the Olympus 17mm 1.8 and it is a damn nice lens. The manual focus clutch works well and makes it feel like a true manual focus lens. Supposedly, the 25mm is pretty good as well.

  13. Okay, Metabones makes both a Canon and Nikon Speedbooster. Canon lenses need electronics to work the aperture. With modern Nikon lenses, known as Nikon G, the aperture can be controlled by a lever on the mount. So the Speedbooster only needs a ring that will turn to activate the lever. With Canon lenses there needs to be an electronic connection to work the adapter. Metabones is the only brand that makes an electronic Speedbooster for Canon. Well there may be another brand... aputure, but I don’t think it’s worth the cost... you may as well spend the little extra for Metabones or save a lot and go with the Lens Turbo. If you are used to lenses with a decent focus ring, then you may not like most native micro 4/3 lenses, unless you go with Olympus or Voigtländer.

  14. - Make sure, you have macos version 10.13.2 17C89 installed (look for the 'combo' update from apple support website, the appstore update installs 17C88!) - install and use the nvidia webdriver: https://images.nvidia.com/mac/pkg/378/WebDriver-378.10.10.10.25.103.pkg - cuda version should be 387.99 ... looks like that this driver is for version 17C88: Nvidia Web Driver - 378.10.10.10.25.102 https://images.nvidia.com/mac/pkg/378/WebDriver-378.10.10.10.25.102.pkg (I used 89 and 103 above)

  15. @maxotics, Hey, awesome post! External recorder will help, as that XAVC is highly compressed. It´s not the 8bit part but the compression showing banding.

    Garbage Can Audio

Well, since no one else is pitching in. Without meaning to be rude, it's pretty bad. I'm not sure if it's just the compression you've used or maybe there's a denoise/pass filter put on? I'm by no means and audio specialist, and don't know any of the terminology, although I'm trying to work on that. With that in mind, I can hear a kind of high pitched garbling sound throughout the recording, the best I can equate this to is what you can sometimes hear on a corrupt mp3. Did you do anything in post to the audio other than levelling? If so, maybe provide an untouched recording? Have you treated the garbage can in anyway? Check out The Booth Junkie on YouTube, he has some incredible budget voice over booth solutions, and I've been working on building my own. If you like I can send you some examples and a description of my setup later today? Like I said though, I'm far from an expert, just trying to get the best sound I can out of the limited knowledge I have haha.

  17. I bet bit rate will end in a solid key to avoid it as much as when "only" 8bit 422: sample (not mine) extracted from (minute 28:30): https://vimeo.com/114978513

  18. This is getting quite out of hand ... and i fail to see why. Some people need AF, some don't. Please don't crap on a camera which is awesome just because it doesn't have the one feature you want. Buy a different camera. Calling ML hacked crap is callous at best. They did a lot for low-budget shooters, including opening up 3k 21:9 RAW on the 5dmk3. I sold mine a few weeks ago, not because of autofocus, but because of lacking exposure tools. I'm grateful to ML, and will continue with them on the truly open Axiom camera. This is also a hobby to me, i'm a one-man band. Right now i am looking at the GH5 or GH5s which seems like an awesome compromise of picture quality (higher res/non-RAW) and a bag of tools i sorely miss (waveform for correct expo on skintones, highlights, etc). Also vectorscope. Of course i'm lusting after a C200. It got the RAW i got so used to. Also the exposure tools i want. But this is a pro-cinema cam, which boasts your coveted AF, pro-XLR sound, internal RAW, wonderful color science, high DR, and is good in low light. And i think the price tag is right. Getting such a package under 10 grand at 1.5kg is unheard of. That's the weight of the 1DC! So the C200 is on my personal shortlist. So is the GH5 and GH5s, and i can barely wait to hear more on january 8th

  21. Wow I thought Premiere was a piece of unreliable shit in the last version of Mac OS. It's even worse in High Sierra!! Avoid this upgrade like the plague if you rely on Adobe Premiere.

  23. An excellent write up. I've linked to the review in my article on the sd Quattro H: http://www.barrons.com/articles/sigmas-marvelous-sd-quattro-h-seeing-reality-1506011091?mod=BOL_da_rta I agree about the DP3, as well. It's my favorite. Cheers.
