  1. What about the large portion of video shooters that never use AF? Seems like more of a hobbyist hangup than something that'd hold back a working pro.

  2. Sorry for starting up another GH5 thread but figured this could focus on test footage/your first go with the camera. Here's mine - got it today, had 10mins of light left after work so took the kids to the park. A mix of 4K 50p and 180fps VFR, daylight WB, iso 200, Sigma 50mm on Speedbooster XL, Natural profile. Shot mainly wide open. No ND filter so controlled exposure with high shutter speed. PRO's so far: Options galore, amazing build, EVF/LCD= amazing. Picture looks GOOD! IBIS = incredible! CON's so far: Annoying sensor that flicks from EVF to LCD (can this be turned off?). Biggest con for me is not being able to flick to 180fps quickly. Had to dig into the menu every time. Really hope this can be assigned to a Function button but doesn't look like it so far. Grrr. I'm a GH4 and A7Sii user so looking forward to comparing. Be hard to beat a7sii but this beast might just do it!

  3. It's basically adding lots of saturation, then contrast using curves (find a proper black value using the waveform!), shifting the hues (bright green a bit to yellow, yellow a bit to orange, orange slightly to red, red a bit to magenta), desaturating shadows and highlights, desaturating bright oranges (helps for skintones as well), pushing gray or low saturation mid and dark tones (not black though, leave dark skin color the way it is!) to teal a bit, adding a bit of grain. That's it basically. :D

  5. Same here, and I'm pretty much a Panasonic fanboy. I'll wait to see if Sony does anything at NAB, or whatever the next photo tradeshow after that is. And I'd like to see how the 400mbps firmware looks, as 150mbps is a little light for the high-motion stuff I shoot. Ahhh, who am I kidding? If I wasn't broke I'd probably have it already

  6. Just like any new camera I'll be waiting for the hysteria to die down and for detailed tests and reviews to be published before I even consider it.

  7. A lot of back and forth - between shooting raw vs log. I did a bunch of tests. And in the end, yea, say what you want how PRO RES 4444 is just as good, I just find RAW gives me better highlight information overall, especially on the Ursa Mini, and it is nice to worry about color temp after shooting on a doc, not during it, as you move quickly between locations, and light changes quickly. sharpness, all that, you can control more in post and yes, in raw, seems to have more noise in the image and log smoothes it out but, at this point, some noise is good - most digital images are too clinical, too sharp, too everything any flaws are welcome to the image so yea, that's my take on it all. So sorry Stu and Prolost cats - raw seems good for me. As well as 100% of the DP-nominated films from the oscars - all shot on Arriraw - I think - or most of them. whether its for VFX or resolution or god knows what - it just seems like all the cool kids are doing it.

  8. I actually trust Kholi as well, but not this time. Comparing V-Log to S-Log on the A7sII? C'mon... If it is nearly as good as V-Log on the GH4 it'll put the A7sII to shame in terms of color science. Watch my showreel to see what I mean: Almost 99% internal V-Log! And yes, I've been using the a7sII quite a lot, always struggeling with the color, even using different profiles and combinations (such as Cine4, Slog2/3 SGamut 3.cine/3/2 etc). On the GH4 I just hit the portrait profile with: Contrast 0 Sharpening -5 NR -5 Saturation -2 Hue 1 And it looks almost identical to the color corrected RAW output of the FS5...

  9. Shot with it yesterday and it's impressive. Colour is much better, you can tell it is 4:2:2 and 10bit. You've all been looking at badly graded V-LOG on YouTube at tiny bitrates compressed to 8bit 4:2:0. The only downside of the 10bit files is they are hard to edit natively. I can see a lot of transcoding to ProRes ahead. ProRes would have been a much more suitable codec than H.264 on a camera with the GH5's performance... But the quality is there in spades. Amazing saturation and realism, super smooth feel to the files. I'm just shooting on Standard BTW.

  10. I think "the large portion of video shooters that never use AF" is not because people don't want to but because the tech/cost isn't there. If every camera had dual pixel video AF from the year 2100 you can bet almost everyone would use it. I barely use continuous AF in video not because I don't want to, but because it's just not very viable on most cameras. Can you imagine if there was very good object tracking and almost perfect AF? Would be amazing for gimbal and run and gun.

  11. Exhibit A ! 8 chargers for simultaneous charging of 16 batteries with storage for charged and need charging, all off one mains outlet and fits in a tray the size of a kitchen drawer. They all sit on a strip of velcro so can be detached easily for travel. Total cost was around £90 with an average of about £9 per battery charger and I think roughly £25 for the USB distributor and cables. Plus £2 for the plastic tray obviously! It was worth it for the lack of clutter alone and having to root through bags to find chargers and batteries all the time.

  12. You cannot claim a camera that shoots clean ISO 3200 at F0.7 is 'not that great in low light' F1.2 on the Speed Booster XL = F0.768 Sensor dynamic range in the RAW files is around 13 stops, so same as the 1D X Mark II full frame 20MP sensor. So not sure why you think DR is less due to the sensor size. It's only a bridge too far if it kills low light and dynamic range. It hasn't. Yes it does. 300mm F2.8 hardly a must-have lens for filmmaking. Bird watching and plane spotting maybe. The GH5 actually excels at telephoto because you can easily attain the equivalent of 800mm on full frame. 800mm! (with the relatively small Panasonic-Leica 100-400mm) I do miss the old body size and ergonomics haven't exactly progressed much but it's still a small camera and the extra features have to go somewhere. You're welcome to have your opinion but there's not much of a factual basis for it.

  13. After a weekend playing with the GH5 and 2 years of the GH4 I am happy with my purchase. Did the improvements warrant the hefty cost and the upgrade in general? probably not for me, as I am just an enthusiast who loves filming family occassions and taking his camera around with him whereever he goes. I am sure all the fancy stuff under the hood would be more noticeable to those using the gh5 to its limits for paid work. I was looking mainly for stabilisation as most of my work is handheld, and this camera delivers on this in leaps and bounds, especially noticeble with non OIS lenses. I purchased vlog and after some initial trials I am back to using standard profiles. I shot some standard footage over the weekend and showed it to my wife and mother in law , 10 bit 4k 150mb in standard profile and the first thing they both said is "wow look how amazing that looks...it feels like you are there!" Now these guys are not pixel peepers, and they watch my footage all the time and are used to high quality hd footage, but this change from the gh4 to gh5 was instantly noticeable to them, the humble viewer who normally wouldnt care if something was shot on an iphone or not! Low light seems to be better as well, and with a bit of netvideo you can get really clean footage.... All in all if I hadnt have managed to sell my GH4 for £1000 I would not have been able to consider and\or afford the GH5. As it was though, it was a £700 purchase for me, I already had lenses so as it stands I am very happy!

  14. The main advances I see from this camera are the 1080p out of camera being of comparable sharpness to downscaled UHD, the ability to use stabilization with my manual primes, and usable V-Log files and monitoring without an external recorder. The low light imprpvement and removal of the sensor crop for 4K are just bonuses.

  15. Not this shit again. It's only a quarter size sensor if super 35 is a half size sensor and super 16 is a 1/8 size sensor. Low light on this thing is actually pretty good - it's not the A7S but it's comparable to the A6300, A6500. Maybe a stop under, becoming noticeable as you get to the upper end of the ISO range. Only in terms of depth of field, but if you see the sensor size as a potential advantage that allows you deeper DOF for the same level of light transmission, then that can be an advantage. There's also a (admittedly very expensive) 7-14 2.8 lens from an Olympus, and a 7.5mm F2 manual focus almost-pancake from Laowa launches shortly. If you want to work with Speed Boosters a ' FF 18mm F1.8' is attainable with a 14mm 2.8 and a Speed Booster XL. But how often do you shoot at Ultra wide? There are a bunch of fast options for M43 from the 20mm on full frame and upward. I guess it just depends on what you're using it for. You have a point that the auto focus is weak vs the competition, and also about the body getting a bit big for micro 4/3. I think that's preferable to a too small body that overheats. I'm guessing that the IBIS, 10 bit, high frame rates, etc necessitated a size increase from the GH4, along with the professional features they've added (HDMI and dual SD slots). If you're all about low light, a Canon cinema EOS or Sony A7s makes much more sense.

  16. I'll go against the current grain here and say it's a very nice camera with a ton of cool options. The 1080p120 and 10-bit are appealing for sure. However it's still a "quarter size" sensor that only does CDAF in video mode, doesn't have a built-in ND, does not AF that well at all with the Metabones, still not great in low light, much tougher obviously to get wide and fast (7-14 F/4 is like 14-28 F/8 on FF), dynamic range less due to sensor size, 20MP might be a bridge too far. Don't know - if this was a native S35 sensor with PDAF in video mode I'd be much more excited. I thought the GH3 / GH4 footage all looked pretty good, and I haven't really seen anything that much better or different IMO on the GH5. On the stills size even the .64 Speedbooster isn't going to get you that FF aesthetic no matter the FPS, and there's really no way possible to get anything to match what a 300 2.8 on a FF body (like a 1dx) will give you. They'd need to release a 150mm F/1.4. I personally thought the size of the GH2 made more sense - after all, this is micro-four thirds, right? But hey, to each their own. Just doesn't do much for ME. Would I take one? Sure. Am I going to fork out $2k? Nah.
    2 points
  17. I totally agree, and to be honest, I am not going to spend $2,000 plus $700 metabones for this setup, I am far more excited for the C-log in 5d mark iv with a reduction in the crop factor, if that happen I am going to break my account to get that camera, hope not to spend some time in jail...

  18. As I am not interested at all at full frame photography and have 3 X1.5 crop cameras from 20-28megapixels (28mgpxls is enough to do some serious cropping) and various lenses from 1.4f to whatever, the camera that can really benefit my job efficiency and workflow, it could only be a Canon C100markIII (or similar). One of the reasons this camera isn't out yet, and instead the C300markII/C700 and even the XC15 are, is because Canon has to see what GH5 is capable of, because a lot of people won't pay a C line premium for a camera doing 1/5 of the things a 2000$ mirrorless can! Now, I just hope that C100 can do 3,5/5ths of the Panasonic, and add some of the Canon goodies, such Dual Pixel AF/ergonomics/battery/Canon color science and video file optimization (Canon Voodoo, really). It is interesting thought, Panasonic, AGAIN, pushes the industry a bit further, and 2000$ for such a modern camera, that works reliably, is a bargain.

  19. Hahahahahaha get out of your cave man. The "MF is for pro, AF for small hobbyists" is a thing of the past. Not so long ago we used MF in photography. Do you know many pro photographers shooting weddings photography in MF?? Nope. For video we are right at the curve now. In 5 years from now, 5% of pros using A7S like bodies will shoot MF in video. When you have used a Canon DPAF system you know it's the real deal, not only making your life a lot easier, but opening your creativity allowing shots impossible before (or very difficult for a one man operation). Good luck run and gunning with swallo DoF with a DJI Ronin gimbal and your Manual focus camera mounted on it.

  20. For many that have moved away from Sony, they'd need to improve the following: * Figure out the overheating issue * Improve their color science * Move to an IBIS that really works and is demonstrably superior to just an OIS lens alone * Implement 4K60p...again, without overheating * A flip out VF would be nice, thank you. I'd be surprised to see if they really come up with something competitive to the GH5, but I'd certainly like to see that happen. It just seems to me that Sony is so set in their ways, they rarely deviate from the path. I've used Sony cameras for years, so I'd like to see them give Panasonic a run for their money. The more competition the better.

  21. 10bit would be nice. However i would rather get a nice 8 bit c-log image from a 1DC than a crappy color 10bit image from a Sony. so I would rather have them first look into color science, then we can talk 10 bit. Cant wait for next month. A7SIII is gonna blow some minds. let's all thank Panasonic for forcing Canon to give us C-Log and Sony to up their game. Also the body will have apparently 20fps and pro speed features for photography. So brace yourselves for the price...

  22. I second that. But @64mulford, you must put deezid at @deezid, so he can recognize our plead much better! I reposted deezids Americanah trailer in the GX85 thread to show among other posters, how awesome Panasonic Lumix material can look. Can´t wait to see Andrew´s footage with this powerhouse the GH5 must be. 400mbps will offer perfect quality for indy and documentary shooters, if GH5 has the same high standard of quality control/mangagement, which the production of the GH4 had.

  24. Have to say the inbuilt stabilisation is amazing. I bought the 42.5 1.7 iOS lens solely because I didn't own a fast stabilised prime for my gh4. I had the 25mm 1.7 LUMIX lens but that had no iOS and was unusable handheld. now with the gh5 I can happily use the 25mm 1.7 handheld.. and find myself using it more than the 42.5 because of the better focal length. i honestly cannot tell much difference between the stabilisation the inbuilt gives with a non stabilises lens and dual is 1 with something like the 12-35 mk1! oh and low light is a lot better, as is noise reduction.. pretty much shot in the dark at 3200 with minimal noise and after some neat video you would think I was shooting at ISO 400!

    Lighting Help?

Loosen the lowermost knob (where the light's stand fitting meets the light stand) and pan, then re-tighten that knob. Or, loosen one of the stand's stem knobs WHILE FIRMLY HOLDING THE STEM ABOVE THAT KNOB. Then, re-tighten that knob.

  26. I bought the Genustech model but I've only used it like a few times. I don't shoot outside much. Also color casts are usually easy to fix in post. Just don't go super cheap and you will be fine!

  27. Couldn't give two shits about AF. No 10bit internal on A7SIII is DOA for many a serious shooter. Will most likely come in higher than A7R2.

  29. When are people able to understand centrism as moderate viewpoint of the whole humankind in general has won the plea?! For some good reason, right? ; ) The whole point, dudes, is the trend to extreme standpoints. To each its own. What about a mid term? That is, when both worlds can coexist altogether. Manual from film and analog environments don't necessarily mean absence of any sort of automation if this will bring some advantage. New jobs will be required for focus pullers. Upcoming techniques can't be stopped because people need to make bucks for living. Go and get a new life! -- stop for once to be morons... Maybe, that's only me but, coming from Steenbecks, I am fully done with these pseudo-film-PROs trying to convince the world they still lead something or someone in this industry. Anyways, on the other hand, this can't be read as you'll have a button able to decide what to put in focus or into the frame, c'mon... : P *Sigh* What about peaking and some other features such as tap to focus or the new touch pull/follow focus aid brought by GH5 to set the point up? ;-)

  30. This. I have two Tiffen VNDs (52mm and 77mm) and any colour cast - only discerned it once, perhaps because of poor exposing - is easy to correct in post.

  34. Nice reel, deezid! I was trying to leave names out of it , but yes he wasn't thrilled with his first hands on. He and Mac seem to really favor the X-T20. I agree that Fuji has nice color. I'd like to get out of the NX1 soon. The prerequisites for me: 1. 10 bit. I always said I'd buy the first 10 bit DSLR. 2. Get into currently produced camera line - the NX1 was / is niche and makes no sense investing more money into it. I need some autofocusing lenses for gimbal work and the odd sporting event.

  35. @TheRenaissanceMan + @kidzrevil Yeah...Modern AF cameras and generally electronic driven devices are for girlies and mollycoddles only. "Real" filmmakers shoot only with old sovjet cameras for max. 150 USD bought on Ebay.

NX500, NX1, GH4, A7, etc... And it´s a 2.000€ camera, I want one but I need to pay it and paided works are bad for me Maybe in a future

  37. I have never had any overheating with my original A7s and that is even after trying to produce it to see what it would take. I haven ever had any problem with Sony colour either and actually find it more true to life than most and never had any problem with any camera for colour having owned/used just about all brands over decades (mostly for stills). At least with most Sony cameras, if you don't grade in video for around $10 you can buy the colour grading app and add many millions of variations that can literally take you years to try all the combinations. I got the App with my A7 but have not needed it really. I don't expect an A7sii to be any real competition to the GH5 (and don't expect the GH5 to be any competition to the A7siii either). I think they will complement each other and (mostly) have different strengths and weaknesses. I think there will be a more expensive pro A7 series camera out before there is an A7siii aimed at both stills and video and it should be good at low light (as FF should be) but not the low light king. If that happens, then the A7s iii will still be crippled by comparison in some ways -maybe still CDAF only, AF I would expect to improve each generation but still not be all that great (compared to the best AF cameras), I would expect it to still be 20mp or less. The first version A7s is my all time favourite camera so far and I expect to use it for a couple of years yet for my uses. By the time I replace it (I hope), other formats will be as good in low light so I can have more choice. Maybe I might find a phone good enough by then? Who knows!

Here you can find instructions on how to get there: https://www.ifixit.com/Guide/MacBook+Pro+15-Inch+Retina+Display+Mid+2012+Heat+Sink+Replacement/10293 Even though it is still TB1 it can use an eGPU I believe, which can make a tremendous difference for premiere. Try this forum: https://egpu.io/forums/mac-setup/. I would still try to contact Apple, since you might be able to still repair it for free (or even replace it).

  40. Personally I'll be waiting to see more footage out of this camera. Because I'm still addicted and in love with my NX1. I work in stills and movies and it's very strong in both. I love how my clients are always blown out by the colors and details from the image straight out of the camera. And also because I have never been a big fan of GHx color science or noise management (I find the image never clean enough for my taste). I don't really like speed boosters because you usually lose some AF speed, and also it's expensive. First low light tests I have seen haven't blown me away. I'm not saying I'll never be interested in the GH5, but I have never been a camera "early adopter".

  41. No cave here but don't know many pros who rely on auto focus enough for it to be as high up the list of essentials as you seem to believe - also the A7s2 has crap af for stills and video, it's the A7r2 that is better but still nowhere near trustworthy. Also an A7s3 is going to cost double what gh5 is, hardly in the same price bracket
    1 point
  42. Sure, if you're not excited about: *4K60p *4K slo mo *IBIS *Improved color science *Obviously improved AF *Internal 10bit 4:2:2 *Improved low light that some say are in the range of an A6300 *Higher rez sensor for better stills Then yeah, not much to get excited about. (I'm sure I've left off some other things)

    Panasonic GH5 day zero

Glad you were able to get your GH5 earlier than expected. It's a downright shame that Panavision has failed to recognize your many years covering their cameras. The quality of your analysis and the size of your audience surely deserved a pre-production loaner. Hopefully one day you will get the recognition you deserve from the good people at Panavision. I am salivating at the prospect of getting my hands on a GH5 myself. I've put in a request with my bosses to get a GH5 and a G85 as well as a couple of new lenses. A few of the features I am excited about are the 10 bit high bitrate video images, the new stabilizer, and the focus stacking for macro stills. The stabilized video is probably the number one thing for me. We have a big Ronin gimbal but it's mainly for our Red Epic, and reconfiguring it for a smaller camera is quite a chore. Near-gimbal quality always at the ready is very exciting prospect indeed. Looking forward to reading about your impressions of the camera. Keep up the good work!

  48. I have a 70-200mm f2.8 II IS and just got a EF-S 55-250mm f/4-5.6 IS STM. The L is nicer, sure, but mostly it's just two stops faster. The plastic STM is much more stable for me. Better IS and much better balanced. I'm blind to the enormous aesthetic differences you notice, I'll admit. To me it just looks slightly worse (bokeh fringe, cats eye, vignetting) and a lot slower. No big differences in micro contrast or rendering. But the L is certainly a beast. Beautiful beautiful image, even wide open.
