  1. They should apply to NX1 but involve EXTREMELY dangerous changes. DO NOT attempt to do them on your own unless you know what you are doing - a mistake WILL require you to send the camera for service. Why? Because you change a library that is required by di-camera-app. For 2.5K you also change the di-camera-app itself. A mistake and di-camera-app will crash leaving you without user interface. So just don't. Wait a bit please

  2. FWIW, we seem to now have a method to make bitrate mods permanent (in hibernation image) so independent of Bluetooth and similar. But this currently applies only to bitrate mods (but should apply to 2.5k on NX500 as well). Other mods still depend on Bluetooth. We are all working on further improvements. See here for more information https://github.com/ottokiksmaler/nx500_nx1_modding/blob/master/Permanent_bitrate_mods.md

  4. @Inazuma It is probably too late, but here is some recordings I did comparing the Panasonic LX100, G7, GX80, and Olympus OMD E-M5II. Skin tones and the X-Rite Video Colour Checker Passport and DSC Labs Colour Chart. All were set to custom white balance using an expo disk before recording was started - the light was usual UK grey overcast. The lens used for the GX80, G7, and OMD E-M5 II was the Panasonic 12-35/2.8 zoom at 35mm at f2.8, ISO 200, 1/50s shutter. The lens on the LX100 is the fixed 24-75mm (equivalent) lens shot at 75mm (eq), f2.8, ISO 200, 1/50 shutter. The Panasonic cameras were all shot at 4k 100Mbps and the Olympus using the 1080p ALL-I 77 Mbps codecs. The video was downscaled to 1080p in FCPX. The Panasonic profiles were "Natural 0, -3, -4, 0" and "Standard -5,-5,-5,-5" The Olympus profiles were "Natural 0, -2, 0", "Muted -2, -2, -2" and "Flat Video" profiles. 5. Hallo all, I had a holiday in Greece, and right before I left I could pic up a GX80 in my camera store. I really like the small form factor for travelling. That's al so the reason why I use mainly 4/3 lenses with it. So for my kind of use its a great little camera. In the link is a little piece I made with it, no colour grading are post stabilisation.

  6. I just sent an email to Panasonic France to confirm HDMI output. They need to be clear on this point. Sounds too good to be true if 10bit 4:4:4... or even 10bit 4:2:2. That would be huge for some people on this forum. Personally, I'm not sure to use it in that way, but just knowing I could is really cool.

  7. Well, it looks like the Arri Alexa 65 has some competition. Panavision have revealed a RED-Weapon-like cinema camera which shoots 8K from a full frame 41 x 21 sensor, to r3d RAW format. Read the blog post

  8. Hey guys check this out! Apparently UHD 60p is now possible!!! 1D(N)x-ii in all of our pockets. http://***URL removed***/forums/thread/4011837 I really hope this is legit. I downloaded the clip and threw it into premiere just to see, and it does appear to be a true 3840x2160 file playing back at 60p. This is huge.

  9. I have already seen footage from the GX85 that I like, (there is a new link on Personal Views that is very smooth and filmic looking, also have a look at Paul Leemings reel GH4 and Red Epic...some really nice stuff there (I just dont agree all Panny Mirrorless have a non filmic look...I have seen too many exceptions to that statement), having said that there are some GX85 clips online that I don't like (for the same reasons you don't. But Softness and filmic is a combination of the lens and the shooters skill, plus you can wind out the in cam sharpening in the GH4 and I assume the GX85. So there is a ton of control, its really up to the shooter.

    1DC vs 1DX II Shootout

There's a point where the image is good enough, and at that point other factors come into play, such as 60p and DPAF. Like many have said there's no point in slightly more DR if you missed the shot. To each their own. But I much prefer the ability to easily nail focus to a negligible difference in picture quality at the extremes. Out of focus shots are immediately apparent, and effect the ability to tell your story. Slow motion 4k is a powerful story enhancing tool. A slight increase in detail in the shadows is not going to impact the story to any great extent. It's really that simple.

  11. You are absolutely right. As for filmic look. I dont know how to say it (english is not my first language), but the filmic image is sharp, but somehow soft at the same time. The softness can hide all distracting imperfections which videoish image will reveal. Videoish look is super sharp which is too distracting for me (it draws away the attention from the story), but I dont mid it in home videos and documentaries. That is just my subjective opinion.

  12. Yep I have used the Gh4 for a long time...while everyone else was obsessing about noise in the shadows, dynamic range, low light etc.. I was obsessing about the jitter or strobe when you panned the camera, it kind of drove me nuts for a while...it was my single biggest beef with the GH4...so I did countless tests. Heres what I found, its at its worst in 4K at 24P or 25P (especially in high contrast scenes) ...medium pans are the worst, slow pans can be acceptable, fast pans also can be OK. Its not there in the higher frame rates at 1080P 30/ 50/ 60 It improves greatly at 30 frames PS in 4K, it improves a lot!! (thats your best bet in 4K I found) Low contrast scenes are also much better too Turning on or off OIS in a lens makes little or no difference from what I saw.... It seems to be less on a 4K screen at 60hz than a 1080P or 1440 screen at the same 60hz refresh rate, I cant say that's totally the case tho..I have only done a few tests. I have seen it other cameras without GS, especially in 4K. The GX85 has it just as bad as the GH4 in this area, but the image stabilization is a huge plus, for that reason I am thinking of getting one. I havre gotten used to it now, and I know what and what not to do...when in doubt, if you are just uploading to the web, use 29.97 (30P) Cheers Hope this helps

  13. You may want to wait some more unless you want to test again later on. After I get back the burner camera from repairs I will try to put together an even smaller mod, which should have less resource consumption (read: memory) than what I have out now. And I also intend to break the bluetooth dependency but this is not news. In general you should keep an eye on work in progress and on work finished or abandoned. The best place for requests is (AFAIAC) to add to this on github.

  14. A fair chunk of this new LUMIX video footage I've seen online seems to be shot by photography enthusiasts that might be, umm... let's just say technically challenged when it comes to finessing motion pictures. The old power plant footage is good to my eye, however. At any rate, I've certainly seen user error, bad shutter speeds -- and even lousy vimeo playback, which could be an issue. I suppose this should be expected. Not too many film pros are clamoring to get their hand on a new $700 camera like the GX85 and create videos that they would then screen online. You often get the dudes that like playing with new toys, not necessarily the ones that'll take their time to understand how to creatively maximize the motion picture aesthetic. That said, many people do seem to have a more discerning eye than me in regards to motion cadence. Maybe there is something about it that you don't like. Perhaps even a 24fps rate makes you uncomfortable? The best bet is to get ahold of actual camera files and see what you think using them in your NLE. Myself? I like using a 0° shutter with 24p. A good dose of motion blur and the traditional film frame rate is a "flaw" I actually sorta like. Not typical, but I prefer certain imperfections in my image. Anything to take the edge off the clinical quality of digital and lean it towards an analog feel.

  16. Hope you will enjoy following tool which I made in my spare time. It's running now only on Windows platform but soon I will publish it for OSX as well: catEYE is a pixel picker and color meter which analysis the master screen display of Windows and OSX platforms. Color at different positions can be evaluated in multiple patch mode. It is also possible to track color along a given straight line from the screen in line mode. It is based on CIE-L*a*b, CIE-L*C*H, L+SH, YCbCr, YCH (Rec709) evaluation methods. Color Space data is shown in two dimension as Waveform Monitor and Vectorscope. You will find it at www.m2port.com

  17. Yeah I put it in a 24p timeline and it slowed down just like it should, then I changed it to 1080 and the 4k scaled just like it should, it's kind of hard to judge based on the video but once I get home I'm going to do my own testing.

  18. Did you try playing it at 30 or 24fps to see if it is real slowmotion and not duplicated frames? Is the quality as good as uhd@30?

  19. Never tried FireMonkey, but nice to experience the difference. For me was hardest way to find a procedure for fast read out of screenshot data in OSX. All typical examples only work with older OSX versions. Finally I found a way to just get master monitor readout. Would be happy to find a way for doing 2nd monitor readout as well.

    1DC vs 1DX II Shootout

There are not many people I know that shoot with a c100 or c300 that would trade in for DSLR format factor even if they gave 20 stops of DR in compressed raw format. NDs, XLRs etc and a good image are what sells it Also worth noting the $1500 XC10 has c-log.... so it is not strictly a price separator

  21. Does anyone know of any sample footage SOOC from the GX80 that I can download? I'd like to see if my computer can handle editing 4k files. It's a 2012 Mac Mini with a 2.3GHz 4-core i7 and the built-in video on that CPU in case anyone is using a similar configuration to edit 4k already. Thanks!

  23. I do not understand why you ignore NX1 120fps. I think has better image than A7SII - they may become equal on ISO 1600. You should try it with some fast lens on ISO100 - you may be surprised. Note for below video - you have to use GammaDR and dial down sharpness - and it did not happen in first video so it is oversharpened. But NX1 has definitely has more details and there is NO crop...

    Cheap wide

I guess this is sort of an aside from the discussion on ultra-wides, but the Rokinon 85mm T1.5 cine lens is one of my favorite pieces of glass. It's got a fairly low-contrast, very creamy rendering of things, definitely gives a dreamy look. Sometimes it makes it harder to cut between the more modern, contasty look of something like the sigma 18-35, but I often prefer it! Just very different. The 85 pretty much lives on my camera during weddings. Rokis are sweet!

  30. I looked at Canon too before buying the GX80, but quickly found that clearly innovation and progressing their lower-end DSLR's weren't their thing. They've somehow been able to market virtually the same camera ever since the 50D- absolutely brilliant for making massive amounts of money! That's not saying they can't make nice images, because they can... but you hit the nail on the head with the word "soft." They decided that details in video should only be for their higher-end cameras. I look at the GX80 and it screams "2016," newer Canons in this price range scream "2010."

That's what caught my eye too. Like I said, I had a preconceived notion that the Rokinons were sterile, but after testing that lens, I am beginning to think otherwise.

  33. At risk of derailing, the new Panasonic Varicam remains the high-end cam I've not tried. It's just not as common as the others, but the image from all tests I've seen is spectacular. Hopefully as much of this can trickle down into the consumer Panasonic models as possible.

  36. Nice camera, but I saw some footage on YouTube and I dont like it. It looks too videoish to me, but this is no suprise for me, because I can say that about all Panasonic mirrorless cameras. I just dont like their image, its too oversharpen and too contrasty. The videos I saw look like home movies (I guess that great cameramen can get more filmic images from these cameras). The images from Canon DSLRS looks more filmic, but with Canon there is the problem that their features sucks. So the best cameras for me are probably from Sony, because you get the best from the both worlds.

  42. What I would do: • wait a couple weeks....IF Apple announces new laptops at their WWDC, hopefully recharging will be via USB-C (then there should be many more battery options than currently with MagSafe) • get a 12.9" iPad Pro and connect via TwoMonUSB (four speakers are built into iPad Pro 12.9" or 9.7", but only 9.7" has DCI-P3 gamut)

  43. I'd rank them as follows, but my judgement on the 1D X II is a bit second hand so far unlike the rest which I all own (well, the A7R II is sold now but I used it quite a bit) 1. FS5 2. RX100 IV 3. A7S II 4. 1D X II 5. A7R2 Don't forget the Canon C500... a used one is a bargain right now. It does 4K 120fps half-RAW via dual 3G-SDI. It does 4K 60fps full res RAW even. It also does very crisp 10bit 2K at 120fps via dual 3G-SDI. The 12bit RGB 444 2K mode goes to 60fps. Above 60fps to 120fps are Slow & Quick modes not regular continuous recording.

  44. I'm doing a documentary in rural parts of South East Asia (i.e Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia etc), it's going to be a two-man (max) film crew with a one host. We could've used a cheaper camera and gotten a sound guy but I wanted to use the Alexa Mini. I actually bought the Mini. I'm coming from the FS7 so I have pretty much very little idea what I'm getting myself into here. I will be using an external recorder that's for sure, but I need some form of scratch audio into the video footage so I can sync them afterwards. I thought about timecode using the Tentacle Syncs that I'm contemplating to buy but honestly I have no idea how to use them, I always synced my audio using waveforms. I've done a little bit of research into timecodes and the timecode modes, and realised that the best option is just to set it on 24 hour run because I can't possibly be timecode jamming all the time when I'm moving around. I just found out about the MixPre-D that allows me to output to two 3-pin XLR that I could possibly just adapt to the 5-pin lemo but that seems like a very bulky option. I really hope someone makes a portable preamp that outputs to a 5-pin lemo so I don't have to go through all these conversions.

  45. I have thought about putting together a video in Dave Dugdale style to talk about the bit-rate hack. I have even wrote down some notes of things to test/discuss one day when I was just sitting around. I think I am subconsciously waiting for someone else todo it so I don't have to lol.

  46. As someone who has yet to install the hacks...it would be nice for Andrew to install them and spotlight these developments with a proper article. You can find tons of information / reviews of the ML hacks for Cannon...all of this for the NX1 is found on two forums. Since I also purchased Andrew's NX1 guide, I think that should be updated with at least a summary of the possibilities that are now possible and how that can lead to a better image.

  48. I work in a rental house and see Alexas, Amiras and Minis fly off the shelves all day long while F55s and Dragons sit in their boxes. And it's only increased as the attention has turned to the newer models and the original Alexa has come down in price. People who might've once settled for a prosumer-style digital cinema camera like the C300 or F3 can now afford to hire an Alexa, and many do without a moment's hesitation. It's the only camera that really operates on a "what-you-see-is-what-you-get basis". The Canons come close, and the Reds and Sonys are a hideous mess of LOG profiles, LUTs and complicated menus. And one thing I can say for certain is that the Alexa is the only camera that is dead-on with its ISOs. ISO 800 on the Alexa is a true ISO 800, seven stops over and under middle-gray. The Canons and Sonys are somewhat faster. The FS7 in particular is way off. I would reckon that ISO 800 on that camera is closer to 1600. Meanwhile, you can take the Alexa out of the box, hit LOG-C on 2K Prores, pull up the Rec.709 LUT on your monitor, light the scene using your light meter like they did in the good old days, and go home with an image that can look good without requiring any special color-correction sauce beyond gamma and color tweaks. And it holds up on a 40-foot screen, And it never breaks or fails. At my workplace, we practically never receive customer support calls regarding Alexas. They come back in perfect condition and our technicians turn 'em around in a matter of minutes. Meanwhile, these Reds are making my co-workers tear their hair out. Simplicity, reliability and raw image quality independent of specs and numbers is where it's at. Arri gets this, which is why they keep winning despite the exorbitant cost of their products.

  50. IMO, the '1/50th rule' is a greatly overrated rule.  And taken far too seriously in the dslr film making world.  I have no problems with shooting 1/25th of a second if I need the extra stop of exposure.  for those pedantic about following a rule, but not with the fortune of shooting with controlled lighting or an alexa, 1/40th is gonna yield much better results than 1/50th IMO
