  1. The buttons are really the 'pressing' issue.

  3. Being sceptical in the face of the unknown is often understandable but should not be considered as informed or even an intelligent opinion on anything. Until the facts are known, It is no less value than speculation. It is true that many tech giants would not dream to let a pre-release product hit the press without it in immaculate, production ready apperance, with every single aspect being identical to the final shipping model. But this company is not a giant and is still relatively 'unknown' to the masses even though they have been shipping working cameras for a few years to many happy customers. I think the issue that a few people may have is 'burnt finger syndrome' - where it's easy to identify a less familiar company (or even better a 'foreign' company) that reveals a promise that many would assume is too good to be true, and are looking at the first sign to pick things apart. It's understandable to a certain degree, but remember this company has a track record of delivering cameras within a couple of months (not several months) of them being announced. This time of year when NAB is buzzing is where everything is a bombardment of crap to process all at once, having any solid knowledge or informed opinion on anything until anything actually ships is like listening to a group of old women gossiping. Let the dust settle, keep a healthy open mind, make an informed opinion before thinking to put some serious dough down on ordering anything expensive.

  4. They definitely have a lot to prove with execution and image quality, but they get an A for innovation. I really like the mechanical ND sled, and the hot swappable lens mounts.

  6. Its just the caps, if the "Buttons where misaligned" I would expect them to not sit in a straight line from one another. The top part of pretty much any button is just a labled cap that is put on last. Either its snapped or glued in the wrong orientation or it might spin. Who knows, but the important parts of the buttons are on a straight line. So its a super easy fix for them that require zero engineering knowledge. Yes, I think its very obvious to everyone that you are very very skeptical and one might even say against this camera Me, I will stick to not judging for or against until I've used it myself.

  7. Blackmagic Design have announced an affordable 4K recorder and 7″ monitor. Unlike the existing solutions on the market, the View Assist 4K records to UHS-2 SD cards and costs under $1k. Read the full blog post

  8. Yes, but why care so much about bit rates and dynamic range, when you apply a look that makes your 4k Pro Res footage look like 8 bit 5D footage...

  9. No evidence of 6K in any of those cameras, or a 10-bit internal codec. And one shouldn't make confident declarations about upcoming products when they're just speculating.

  10. Misaligned button caps on what is probably one of two demo/ working prototype TERRA's at NAB is not exactly an accurate sign of quality control for a final production run. With the amount of people who will get their grubby hands on them during the show, I'm sure the buttons will correct themselves through finger touch friction which I'm sure will alleviate the very real concern we are all having at this time.

  11. The part where the 5k sensor is coming in the fall and the global shutter is not worked out yet makes me sad And I guess the idea is that the lower sensitivity in HFR is due to the lower sampling resolution from cropping or line-skipping? Or is it something else? It's hard enough to get enough for HFR but lower sensitivity makes it extra hard, but if it's just due to the same things that other manufacturers have to deal with but don't compensate for then it's just par for the course. ie. RED/Sony should rate their 2K modes 1-2 stops slower to compensate for increased visibility of noise but they dont.

  12. My prediction of a custom build camera was right then. Reminds me of the Apertus Axiom project. Other than that, seems really cool. I just hope it's going to be reliable. That sensor is everything....

  14. Anyone who isn't sceptical of any new camera is, well I dont want to be insulting here, but lets just say it's perfectly reasonable to be sceptical. The flaw of buttons being rotated and even upside down is an embarrassing mistake that makes your product look bad even if it is just a mock up. Red or blackmagic, canon or anyone would get called out on that kind of thing. Would the new iphone ever have writing upside down? I don't think so. Im glad it was pointed out, because it does matter if you are considering spending $6000 on one.

  15. I bet right now it is just a drawing: "WHERE IS ALL THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS? At this time, we are only publishing a few technical specifications. We hope to publish our final manufacture and testing specifications in early summer." Also when God is involved, you usually end up loosing money: "SHIPPING IN DECEMBER? REALLY? SERIOUSLY? Yes, shipping in December. Well sort of. We will be shipping our first units in December. With that said, we cannot guarantee this for your order. A lot of factors will determine your actual ship date including but not limited to the total number of reservations placed and your number in the reservation line. Also, any unforeseen manufacturing shortages, and of course natural disasters and/or acts of God could change things."

  16. I was playing around with this last night and it looks like you can get the Saturation, Sharpness and contract to values that are not shown in the menu including negative numbers. ex: if you set sharpness to -10 in the menu and do "prefman get 0 0x87c l" comes back showing the value is set to 0 and like wise if you set sharpness to +10 in the menu and prefman get again reads the value as 20 therfore -10=0 and +10=20. now if you do "prefman set 0 0x87c l -10" witch would be an equivalent to -20 sharpness in the menu then do a "prefman get 0 0x87c l" it read the value is still being set to -10. I will do some more testing to see if the value is actually sticking during or after recording and if it makes a difference to the quality then report back. I also wrote a script last night that uses nested while commands to consecutively record 5 sec clips testing all the gammaDR setting in a given range. this could in theory test every possible combination for saturation, sharpness, contrast setting automatically(1000 tests total). Let me know if any one is interested in this script for themselves. This script could also very easily be altered to do or include MBL, RGB setting or HUE settings if that is your kinds of thing.

    Craft Camera is coming!

I liked the modularity concept, also the price, also the ProRes, which i am assuming is 4:2:2, so early December we should expect to see some good video reviews from the early adopters…...

  23. Yep! I'm documenting the process for a video tutorial, IF IT WORKS. hahahahah I think it would be enough to cover it, since 4 inches = 100mm. You'd have to be creative mounting it, but aren't we all?

    Craft Camera is coming!

Looks a bit like a 3D Design / product design university student major project to me. Just looking at those renders makes me weep at how many of the mechanical aspects need to be fulfilled flawlessly. It's all very well drawing something novel and pretty, but making them is another matter. That sucker looks like they'd need a Sony R+D budget to pull it off at their expected price. The reason the RED modularity works is that they price their gear to allow for the tremendous costs associated with making them work properly. I hope I'm wrong and they deliver because if they don;t I can see a handful of optimistic early adopters being very disappointed.

  25. could the following be used on the NX1? From here: http://x265.readthedocs.org/en/default/cli.html --nr-intra <integer>, --nr-inter <integer> Noise reduction - an adaptive deadzone applied after DCT (subtracting from DCT coefficients), before quantization. It does no pixel-level filtering, doesn’t cross DCT block boundaries, has no overlap, The higher the strength value parameter, the more aggressively it will reduce noise. Enabling noise reduction will make outputs diverge between different numbers of frame threads. Outputs will be deterministic but the outputs of -F2 will no longer match the outputs of -F3, etc. Values: any value in range of 0 to 2000. Default 0 (disabled).

  26. Or waveforms...or false color...or vector scopes... To compete at this price point, BM needs to step up their monitoring features. Otherwise, it's exactly what I hoped they'd make. The audio inputs are particularly exciting for me, both to augment the poor audio of BM cams and for making Let's Plays without having to sync the commentary later. Anyone know if they're still using a TN panel in this? Or have they stepped up to IPS for this one?

  27. Yes, let´s talk about love...:) I love to talk about looks, colors, grading etc. (far more than to talk about tech specs) In comparison to the London impressions from above here a anamorphic test clip from cooke with a color palette that I really like:

  28. Well, Andrew is not an anonymous poster anymore and GH5 sales will hardly compete with a raw camera but, for some buyers speculation on 6K / 4K@60p / internal 10-bit can "bring some noise to" real deals out there on potential customers. Usually, wise business men think twice when ask a loan from the bank.

  29. No, you've actually lost my post : ) Not on yours but the point your post was addressed to. Speculation (not specs ; ) for wishful thinking specs from the deepest of our dreams doesn't help current reality sales such as I and you want to believe new Kinefinity Terra is able to get.

  30. As soon as you get into heavily stylized grades, there's going to be a large degree of subjectivity. Still fun to discuss, though. When stylized grading is done well, I like it. But 95% of the time with stuff I see online, it looks hokey and I think the footage would've looked better with a more natural (albeit safe) look. It's risky for sure. edit: It's often done well with higher budget/hollywood stuff. I think it's because there's a specific plan and reason. The art direction, color palette are all designed to compliment the grade. Whereas with random online stuff, it's just some LUT thrown on to random footage with no real plan.

  31. So many questions! Is the 1080p monitor output full quality or aliasy and low quality? How much more power consumption is 1080p output than 720p? Can it downscale to record oversampled ProRes in camera? Can it bake LUTS? Does it still have "Golden" modes for binned RAW? Is the new 5k sensor better than the 6k? Why are the DR specs sometimes higher for 6k and sometimes lower? Any AF support? Any tech support in the US? What's the deal with the different gain and EI modes? does the 5k sensor have improved rolling shutter vs the 6k? is the 5k global shutter option working on their 5k prototype? Is it awesome?

  32. Even because this can bring some noise to Terra 5K sales, as for instance. And we need those guys to succeed :-)

  35. edit: FFS, just post a link, instead of all that shit! I mean all companies have small print that can fuck you - ever read the iTunes agreement? If they can actually deliver & the image is good, then this could be a groundbreaking product. You could simply start off with a simple set up & use what you've got already. Then buy as you go, until you have what you want. If it has a sensor as good as or better than the (put your camera of choice here - not going to get into that debate here), it'll be a winner? And...look,...they...gave...you...120fps...for...all...you...slo-mo...freaks...! I wonder if its the same company that was talking about doing a modular camera a few years ago? Think that might have been a photography camera though?

  37. Fyi: It's $9k for the Terra 6k Pro Pack. I think a lot of the folks that have nothing but praise also really are not potential customers. People seriously considering this camera will be discriminating. And QC is very important as it is directly tied to reliability.

    Craft Camera is coming!

In all honesty, if BlackMagic came out with an updated BMMCC that added a modular LCD screen and global shutter, the Craft Camera would disappear. At least the HD version would.

Yes, but they also make it sound like you don't need the power module unless you want to use two batteries. It seems like intentional vagueness.

  40. Question for all: is the d5300 capable of outputting all its frame rates to an external recorder? Interested in the cheaper BM View Assist Or is it only capable of 30p output?

  41. What I should have added, is that I'm using FCPX & it appears to automatically fit the 1080 height of the image into the new 858 height of the timeline, but the additional sides stick out. So what is FCPX doing? Is it somehow squeezing the height into the new size and is that even possible - surely 858 pixels is 858 pixels? Or is this so boring, that no one gives a shit? Too techy, for the techs?

  42. Fuzzy head this morning - absolutely confusing Focar for Foton. Now I see what you're doing! Yep, you're best off getting cutting!!! I remember a while ago, I was having a conversation (via e-mail) with QuickHitRecord about diopters & found a website that might do this sort of thing - can't find it in the ton of bookmarks I have at the moment, but do remember that it was in the US (I'll keep searching).

  47. I find massively pushed-up black levels irritating! They work when there's a big light source in frame as then it's contextually relevant, but otherwise they're a sort of Instagram affectation... the colour palettes is nice though

  48. The RED EMOXXX BILBO EDITION has a technical maximum frame rate rate of ∞FPS AT ∞K because IT DOESNT SHOOT FOOTAGE!!! It only captures RAW EMOTION straight from your BRAIN to FLOPPY DISKS! DO EVERYTHING IN POST!!!!!!!!1111!!1one! *** do consider the C100/ninja 2 combo though. It is a bargain and grades excellently. This was shot that way, in DNxHD 220X. It's 8-bit out of the camera, but still brilliant due to Canon voodoo.
