The buttons are really the 'pressing' issue.

In a little less than 5 hours I will have my hands on that camera and will take photos and let you know about the buttons, and everything else.

Being sceptical in the face of the unknown is often understandable but should not be considered as informed or even an intelligent opinion on anything. Until the facts are known, It is no less value than speculation. It is true that many tech giants would not dream to let a pre-release product hit the press without it in immaculate, production ready apperance, with every single aspect being identical to the final shipping model. But this company is not a giant and is still relatively 'unknown' to the masses even though they have been shipping working cameras for a few years to many happy customers. I think the issue that a few people may have is 'burnt finger syndrome' - where it's easy to identify a less familiar company (or even better a 'foreign' company) that reveals a promise that many would assume is too good to be true, and are looking at the first sign to pick things apart. It's understandable to a certain degree, but remember this company has a track record of delivering cameras within a couple of months (not several months) of them being announced. This time of year when NAB is buzzing is where everything is a bombardment of crap to process all at once, having any solid knowledge or informed opinion on anything until anything actually ships is like listening to a group of old women gossiping. Let the dust settle, keep a healthy open mind, make an informed opinion before thinking to put some serious dough down on ordering anything expensive.

They definitely have a lot to prove with execution and image quality, but they get an A for innovation. I really like the mechanical ND sled, and the hot swappable lens mounts.

Site is live: http://craftcamera.com/ That is probably the coolest looking camera I've ever seen.

Its just the caps, if the "Buttons where misaligned" I would expect them to not sit in a straight line from one another. The top part of pretty much any button is just a labled cap that is put on last. Either its snapped or glued in the wrong orientation or it might spin. Who knows, but the important parts of the buttons are on a straight line. So its a super easy fix for them that require zero engineering knowledge. Yes, I think its very obvious to everyone that you are very very skeptical and one might even say against this camera Me, I will stick to not judging for or against until I've used it myself.

Blackmagic Design have announced an affordable 4K recorder and 7″ monitor. Unlike the existing solutions on the market, the View Assist 4K records to UHS-2 SD cards and costs under $1k. Read the full blog post

No evidence of 6K in any of those cameras, or a 10-bit internal codec. And one shouldn't make confident declarations about upcoming products when they're just speculating.

Misaligned button caps on what is probably one of two demo/ working prototype TERRA's at NAB is not exactly an accurate sign of quality control for a final production run. With the amount of people who will get their grubby hands on them during the show, I'm sure the buttons will correct themselves through finger touch friction which I'm sure will alleviate the very real concern we are all having at this time.

Man, you can wash your blacks out a little bit - don't listen to these idiots, since taste is absolutely subjective. And your footage always looks nice...

Anyone who isn't sceptical of any new camera is, well I dont want to be insulting here, but lets just say it's perfectly reasonable to be sceptical. The flaw of buttons being rotated and even upside down is an embarrassing mistake that makes your product look bad even if it is just a mock up. Red or blackmagic, canon or anyone would get called out on that kind of thing. Would the new iphone ever have writing upside down? I don't think so. Im glad it was pointed out, because it does matter if you are considering spending $6000 on one.

    Craft Camera is coming!

I bet right now it is just a drawing: "WHERE IS ALL THE TECHNICAL SPECIFICATIONS? At this time, we are only publishing a few technical specifications. We hope to publish our final manufacture and testing specifications in early summer." Also when God is involved, you usually end up loosing money: "SHIPPING IN DECEMBER? REALLY? SERIOUSLY? Yes, shipping in December. Well sort of. We will be shipping our first units in December. With that said, we cannot guarantee this for your order. A lot of factors will determine your actual ship date including but not limited to the total number of reservations placed and your number in the reservation line. Also, any unforeseen manufacturing shortages, and of course natural disasters and/or acts of God could change things."

    Petition for Samsung NX1 hack

I am wondering that there is no report about quality of highbitrate 2.5K mode by some of NX500 users (Vasile's latest high bitrate hack for NX500). It was so demanded...
  16. 1 point
could the following be used on the NX1? From here: http://x265.readthedocs.org/en/default/cli.html --nr-intra <integer>, --nr-inter <integer> Noise reduction - an adaptive deadzone applied after DCT (subtracting from DCT coefficients), before quantization. It does no pixel-level filtering, doesn’t cross DCT block boundaries, has no overlap, The higher the strength value parameter, the more aggressively it will reduce noise. Enabling noise reduction will make outputs diverge between different numbers of frame threads. Outputs will be deterministic but the outputs of -F2 will no longer match the outputs of -F3, etc. Values: any value in range of 0 to 2000. Default 0 (disabled).

As far I'm concerned, until we see working cameras in people's hands, this is vaporware. Really sexy, perfect form factor, amazingly priced vaporware.
  19. 1 point
Or waveforms...or false color...or vector scopes... To compete at this price point, BM needs to step up their monitoring features. Otherwise, it's exactly what I hoped they'd make. The audio inputs are particularly exciting for me, both to augment the poor audio of BM cams and for making Let's Plays without having to sync the commentary later. Anyone know if they're still using a TN panel in this? Or have they stepped up to IPS for this one?
  20. 1 point
Well, Andrew is not an anonymous poster anymore and GH5 sales will hardly compete with a raw camera but, for some buyers speculation on 6K / [email protected] / internal 10-bit can "bring some noise to" real deals out there on potential customers. Usually, wise business men think twice when ask a loan from the bank.
  21. 1 point
No, you've actually lost my post : ) Not on yours but the point your post was addressed to. Speculation (not specs ; ) for wishful thinking specs from the deepest of our dreams doesn't help current reality sales such as I and you want to believe new Kinefinity Terra is able to get.

    James Miller deLUTS are awesome

As soon as you get into heavily stylized grades, there's going to be a large degree of subjectivity. Still fun to discuss, though. When stylized grading is done well, I like it. But 95% of the time with stuff I see online, it looks hokey and I think the footage would've looked better with a more natural (albeit safe) look. It's risky for sure. edit: It's often done well with higher budget/hollywood stuff. I think it's because there's a specific plan and reason. The art direction, color palette are all designed to compliment the grade. Whereas with random online stuff, it's just some LUT thrown on to random footage with no real plan.

So many questions! Is the 1080p monitor output full quality or aliasy and low quality? How much more power consumption is 1080p output than 720p? Can it downscale to record oversampled ProRes in camera? Can it bake LUTS? Does it still have "Golden" modes for binned RAW? Is the new 5k sensor better than the 6k? Why are the DR specs sometimes higher for 6k and sometimes lower? Any AF support? Any tech support in the US? What's the deal with the different gain and EI modes? does the 5k sensor have improved rolling shutter vs the 6k? is the 5k global shutter option working on their 5k prototype? Is it awesome?

  26. 1 point
Fyi: It's $9k for the Terra 6k Pro Pack. I think a lot of the folks that have nothing but praise also really are not potential customers. People seriously considering this camera will be discriminating. And QC is very important as it is directly tied to reliability.

In all honesty, if BlackMagic came out with an updated BMMCC that added a modular LCD screen and global shutter, the Craft Camera would disappear. At least the HD version would.

Yes, but they also make it sound like you don't need the power module unless you want to use two batteries. It seems like intentional vagueness.

Question for all: is the d5300 capable of outputting all its frame rates to an external recorder? Interested in the cheaper BM View Assist Or is it only capable of 30p output?

    Craft Camera is coming!

It looks cool and could be a winner. Obviously, there are a few issues... 1. This is just a computer render... Not a big deal, but they probably don't even have a prototype yet, so their deadline is VERY ambitious. 2. The modularity helps to keep the cost down, but most are needed and if not needed all the time, who will ever lighten their load since the multitude of electrical contacts create a lot of situations for damage. Basic SD storage should be made available for the S16 sensor model, so the additional module isn't necessary... For smaller budget projects and to compete with the BMPCC/BMMCC. 3. The audio module should be an add on for external microphones only. The video and website literature makes no mention of onboard microphone. So, without an onboard microphone you are really forced to buy the audio module even if you intend to synch double sound. 4. Why aren't they at NAB? It is expensive to attend a trade show, but the amount of press and investment opportunities outweigh the costs. So, I would be very interested in this if they worked out a 4th configuration between the action model and the HD model, or updated their HD module to include basic SD recording and an onboard microphone. But it's still early so who knows what may happen.

Could be. If so that means they'd be releasing a sensor that is 3 years old. At the price point though I wouldn't be surprised.

It would be nice if there was some competition in the raw recorder field. I'd love to be able to use a 5" monitor/recorder for FSRAW (though I understand why it would be technically tricky to build such a product).

    Petition for Samsung NX1 hack

I've tried it yesterday and there are not much risks, at first the liveview froze when I selected VGA(2.5k) 25p but a simple reboot and it worked. However, VGA(2.5k) 50p captures 2 times the normal speed and some other options in VGA made the video rip apart. I can't report much on the quality, I'll do tomorrow if enough time with a daytime scene. Great work from Vasile again, we can really see improvements steps by steps. Any chance we could modify the width of the sensor region for anamorphic? Cheers!

Kinefinity 2016 Nian new product launches

Well I guess some people are just easier to please than others. As for judging, as I have not had any hands on time, I can only judge by what I see, and I see crooked buttons. If so easy to fix, why is it not fixed? Just makes me wonder what else is not fixed.
  38. 1 point
It's not, but just don't take things too personally. I do, and look at what trouble it gets me in. I'm dead serious about the best thing I ever shot being on a t2i btw. I was lucky enough to shoot an ad for NBC on an Alexa and MK-V after that (based on showing the t2i video to a client) and it wasn't nearly as good because I didn't have enough time to control. Maybe next time it will be better. But anyone who judges you on your camera has nothing better to be judged by than theirs. And a camera costs money, not talent. I still try to recommend certain things to people based on their needs. Unfortunately, money is usually the main one for most people. I remember going to a ramen restaurant where everyone had to speak their dreams, it was a cute place with that theme–and 9/10 they were to get a full time job. Which is to say, to have someone else's approval, financially and in terms of self-worth. But these people lacked the money and approval not to need it, and that's most of us. If you can be true to yourself, and not your client or the internet, more power to you. But at the same time, that's a luxury, and so I feel the only answer is see everyone's point of view. As storytellers, the goal we should all have is to worry about hiring the best DP instead of buying the best camera. Or being the DP who can choose any camera. People are always worth more than gear. But we have time to get there and until then, our needs are our own.

I find massively pushed-up black levels irritating! They work when there's a big light source in frame as then it's contextually relevant, but otherwise they're a sort of Instagram affectation... the colour palettes is nice though

The RED EMOXXX BILBO EDITION has a technical maximum frame rate rate of ∞FPS AT ∞K because IT DOESNT SHOOT FOOTAGE!!! It only captures RAW EMOTION straight from your BRAIN to FLOPPY DISKS! Flolight Bladelight

Has anyone else here had experience with Flolight's Bladelight? I have spent some time with it during a couple shoots now and been quite impressed. Color rendering is good and form factor is pretty unique. The flat panels have their place I suppose, but, after purchasing several a few years ago, have rarely actually used them. They seem like the type of thing I most often see used atop a camera hotshoe from the guys who bring their cameras to document NAB I wrote up a fairly long review of sorts here if you're interested in the Bladelight. A field-power option would be nice, but, at least the one I have, is only AC power.

A6300 has 3 dealbreakers for me: 1) Shut downs due to heat, even in moderate temps is unacceptable for professional work unless you have a second camera to use as a backup 2)Horrific, worse than any other camera ever rolling shutter.(http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthread.php?303559-Measuring-rolling-shutter-put-a-number-on-this-issue!) 3) Horrid battery life. Get a used GH4 and a speed booster for your canon glass, you won't be disappointed.
