  1. yeah well if they could get into a dynamic range and color depth war that would be great thanks. can't wait to get my compressed 8k 4:2:0 8 bit image. so exciting.

  2. Maybe I should get back into selling diffusion filters . . . 'cause I don't know one actor/actress who wants to see their pores reproduced in 8K detail.

  6. Assuming you haven't seen this.. it looks like cameramanben has done something really useful here: he's compiled a ton of research and written a JavaScript LUT calculator tool released under a GNU freesoftware license (I think this is about as free as it gets). This could be used for 1D shaper LUT's, or 3D LUT's with gamma/gamut baked together - if that's more your thing - and even custom code value ranges. I think you can upload a sample image too. I see an A7s profile as well as Rec2020 gamut, DCI-P3 gamut... it's on github. Online tool: http://cameramanben.github.io/LUTCalc/LUTCalc/index.html Link to browser based apps: https://cameramanben.github.io/LUTCalc/ Objective-C wrapper for MacOS: https://github.com/cameramanben/LUTCalc-For-Mac He needs a donation button somewhere.

  7. Not really understanding the negativity on this announcement. Can only assume the Canon name, coupled with the likely high cost. Worth remembering though, if the flagship C500 II is 8K/60fps then the lower models have room to move up a level without threatening the flagship, eg 4K/24fps and 1080/120fps Probably good news all around.

  8. Canon just keeps announcing random grossly overdone camera technologies. 4 million ISO, and then this. And then everyone is kept in the dark for the next 10 years over what the footage actually looks like, because NASA is using this for indulging in voyeurism wrt to spying on alients making love on Pluto. I think Canon should concentrate on making cameras to compete with the G7, the GH4, the LX100 etc etc instead of all.

  9. It's difficult to tell 2K from 4K in a theater, let alone in a tv. 8K is nowadays as useless as it can get, to me. And I am for progress. But better codecs and more ergonomic/better menus cameras would be more welcome, at least by me! RAI, italian public television broadcasts in SD 4:3.

    GH4 V-Log $99

Just noticed that B&H Photo now only let's you pre-order V-Log L and estimates availability on October 7th. I assume that means their initial inventory is already spoken for. Just checked my direct order with Panasonic and it still says mid-september for the estimated delivery. So hopefully we'll start to get it as early as a week from now.

  13. I'm curious about this sort of assertion. Not because higher latitudes are nice, but because viewers seldom got more than 12 stop of latitude from their cinema experiences during the first 95% of cinema history. "Cinema style," by my own experience, isn't about the end viewer getting a ton of DR. If you want to make a good documentary, DR and that sort of technical craftsmanship is a consideration yes, but I personally kind of think it should be farther down on the list of things to fret about. Content demands to be king when it comes to docs. How could it be otherwise? If there's no story, how do awesome visuals overcome that sort of shortcoming? When it comes to docs, I'd suggest being there and getting the coverage in the best way as possible for your project should be the main consideration. Of course, the OP needs to balance those sorts of considerations out with what he ultimately wants IQ-wise. Myself, I'd be perfectly content to shoot a doc on a NX1 with a 50mm lens. If I knew I was going into a bunch of low-light situations, I'd consider a Sony. I'd not worry about off-board video recording. I mean, any camera with some talent behind the shooting will easily offer a "cinema" experience.

  14. So I've really been falling in love with Resolve during the last few weeks in terms of ease and smoothness of the edit, but I'm now experiencing grave issues that have are pushing me to the brink of despair. Shot an event on Sunday, started the edit, realized I had to do something to the files in order to be able to use the audio, rewrapped them to .mov with ffmpeg, started editing (extremely slow in 4K, tried to tweak settings, and it got better), then moved the files from my RAID to an SSD, because the HDs were just too slow. Relink seemed to work, but with the expansive timeline of around 20 mins worth of clips, I can now hardly work with it. At times is fine and speed is OK, too, but more often than not Resolve starts to put in a preview frame in the timeline here and there, gets stuck on one frame in the preview window and then does nothing. No playback editing possible, the playhead just doesn't do anything if I move it and press play. If I quit Resolve, QTDecoder keeps lingering. After relaunch, sometimes, it starts to work, but more often than not it doesn't. Here and there I get a green frame or red exclamation mark on a clip preview or two. Never had that before. Does anyone have suggestions for a fix? I've already put in quite a few hours trimming the clips, so it would be great if I didn't have to start from scratch. Have read about Resolve having issues with .mov clips in Windows, but I have no idea how to get it around it and have sound. Also I don't know whether, if I transcode to ProRes now and try to put the new clips in, I'm losing my timeline and progress. I've messed around with playback settings a bit, tried to change the pre-allocated RAM size and whathaveyou, but the issues keep coming back, even if I revert to default settings. My rig: Core i7-4930K @ 4.1GHz, 64G RAM, GeForce GTX 970, newest drivers, Windows 10 Any input is appreciated! Mattias, maybe you have a clue?

No major issues so far, and I can still switch back to the former mount without too many manipulations. However the flange distance (I think its how its called) is quite short, so we cant fit our Leica 35mm. We're not done experimenting though : )

  18. Did a quick test yesterday with my RX IV - quick question, is everyone keeping at 180 deg shutter even at the HFR rates...I ran out of light and had to shoot 360 last night and it seemed ok, will try proper testing in bright light to see the motion blur differences. Didn't have enough light for 1/480s (or whatever it is in the camera for 240fps) - also need to play with the profile settings, so far it grades just like my a7S - might just try PP1 with some minor changes. Thnx for all the info guys great thread

  19. Long ago they had posted screen shots from a 5k Red Camera and the image was way too sharp and no grain had been added. I could literally see the hair on the nose of the actress. Me being me, I pointed it out. They obviously deleted the post and blocked me. Hahaha

  20. Oh, I'm just retarded, I always use the newest stuff because I'm not happy with the old and hope for fixes and improvements in performance. To be honest, this is the first time in my life I find my PC sufficiently stable and fast to do any serious work on it (except writing, gaming or whatever). I wasn't content with Resolve 11 and I wouldn't have wanted to get into filming before because the image quality I could have afforded wouldn't have done it for me. Same goes for Windows. Before 10 I always felt it had too many bugs, was too slow, too many issues with USB and so on. I'm a strange person.

    GH4 V-Log $99

I have a question, Would it be possible to expose using something like the Standard Profile, then switch to V-Log for shooting? I can definitely see some problems trying to get accurate exposure while in V-Log? Should I expose using the histogram and meter on the camera? Never used a log format before so pardon the newbie question.

    Shooting a doc.

Hey Philip, here is an example of result I got from the NX1 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0DEXoZ1WC_A I did use a fantastic lens (Leica 50mm Summilux) but I think the NX1 can have some room for grading - you just have to make a lot of test before the shooting : deciding what kind of color / look you want to give to your footage, and then see how much the codec can support before it starts breaking out - and see if the locations for the shooting (landscapes, blue sky, portraits, etc.).

  26. I had a great / weird trip to Croatia last month. I was psyched to get out and film and capture some of the beautiful scenery there, but when I arrived I was kind of devoid of ideas and inspiration. I guess work, the bad kind of work, can do that to you. When I got back I had a bunch of footage, didn't really know what to do with it, how to tie it all together and decided (after watching a few Brandon Li videos on holiday with my girlfriend) to try and capture some of his energy that he creates so wonderfully with camera movement and sound design put together in post. And this arose. http://www.vimeo.com/138451703 I kind of like the finished result. It's not my favourite travel thing I've ever done though. Or, who knows. Probably now just need some distance. Any feedback is welcome as always. Oh, and Sony A7s + Cine 4 modified by Kholi (sorry Mr Reid) + 24-105mm L + a couple shots from my new Carl Zeiss Jena 50mm lens which for some reason I only used at night in slow motion. Wish i'd used it during the day.

  27. 8 bit jpeg off the highest dynamic range dslr sensor available, thus why they look good. And I did say give us "better dynamic range" not only higher color sampling and more bit depth. I'd take a high dynamic range 1080p image over a poor DR 4k one anyday. but to each his own.

  30. I recently filmed the Northern Lights just outside Elk Island Park in Western Canada. It was a truly magical evening--I've never seen them so bright or full of energy before. Not sure if it because of the recent solar flares interacting with the atmosphere or what. http://dcbrandonproductions.com/elk-island-northern-lights/

  31. Just did some tests. Framing guides on/off had no ill effect for me. Changing metering linked to spot focus didn't either. However, changing metering to evaluative / spot metering AND having auto brightness on the display cured the problem for me with firmware 1.40. Just an FYI.

    GH4 V-Log $99

That's an interesting way to describe it. In terms of look, I'd say it has a detailed 4K image with a natural look to sharpness, silky smooth tonal transitions, and strong accurate colors. Skin tones look wonderful, but nothing at all like Canon--more neutral, accurate and (imo) cinematic without falling into Sony sterility. It's a very sexy image. The GH4+4K recorder combo is a beast! I can't think of anything else with this form factor that can match it on image quality or price:performance ratio.

  35. Just a little something like this for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/FOTGA-C-Mount-Lens-to-M4-3-Adapter-for-E-P1-DF1-G1-G10-GH3-GH2-GH1-GF6-/181626377484 . Some lenses to try can be had on eBay as well, e.g. http://www.ebay.com.au/sch/m.html?_armrs=1&_from=R40&_sacat=0&_nkw=cctv+lens&_ssn=roxsen&LH_PrefLoc=2&_sop=15 . Actually the first time I see those with 'APS-C' tag and reworked lenses. Bit more expensive as well. Sounds interesting.

  37. I agree that methods like these are not good, but it was crapware that was intended to help the stability of the computer for novices. Thats why these were a problem with only the non-thinkpad series. Definetly not malware. Also Lenovo learned and stoped puting it in new computers. Emanuel is right, fear is a bitch. Here's a hint to you - misinformation does not help.

  44. Hi Fuzzynormal, I completely agree with you. It only matters what you are expecting from a camera that it should depend on the context of the shooting first. From my small personal experience, the NX1 does suffer from a low DR (its like 10 stops max), but also from the codec H265, which has to be transcoded first, and the breaks appart quite quickly (again IMHO) during the grading. However the NX1 offers very nice colors which are quite a good place to start. Now if you really want to go for a film look, I wouldn't necessarily go for a NX1. However, if you are going to have a lot of interviews, I would trust the NX1 skin colors better than Sony A7s Slog.

  45. Hi Guys, Yes, you are right. I am the developer of the Cinema 4K app. I have started this development, because of the limitations of the built in camera app. I have also tried other apps for 4K video recording, but at the end I decided to write my own. I have tested it on an LG G4 and Samsung Galaxy S6. On LG G4 the AE lock is not working and - because of the weaker CPU - the 4K recording sometimes drops frames when other apps are running in the background. On the Galaxy S6 there is no SD card option, however I could attach an external storage over OTA and configure the app to record there. Works good. Cinema 4K relies on the Camera2 API. This is quite new in Android and unfortunately not too many manufacturers implemented it on their phones. It also requires Lollipop (5.0) Android version. The Google Play Store automatically selects the available devices for download the app based on the OS. This might be the reason Note 3 is not listed. I will try to set this manually if possible. Thanks for starting this forum and your valuable feedback. I am planning to add some new features in the future, but at the same same time I would like to keep the app as simple as possible and not to overload. The main idea is to get the maximum quality from the camera and later on you can edit it on PC/Mac environment. Thanks and Best Regards, Gabor

Samsung NX1 is the correct answer. UHD, ISO 100, 85 mm f/1.4. It's actually a screenshot from Premiere's fullscreen preview, so that's why it's 1920x1080 (display is using that resolution). I don't know if print screen + pasting into photoshop + exporting for web made any difference in terms or banding or anything. I personally like it really much how this camera handles the colors. I've used GH3 and LX100 before it, and it was really difficult for me to get natural look out of those cameras. Lips were always purple.

  47. One way would be to shoot a colour chart with both a BM camera and a Canon 5d and then use the colour matching feature in Resolve to match the Canon footage to the BM.

  48. One thing needs to be said about Samsung, they sure seem to listen to usercomplaints and provide fixes fast, they probably have learned from Blackmagic how not to do it.
