1. For the low-budget film maker, the Pocket Cinema Camera is a "game changer."   If you're a GH2 user looking for much more DR and detail in the shadows, I can't see the GH3 bringing much new to the table in terms of image quality.  By comparison, the GH3 is looking like Panasonic's 5D mk III: an expensive incremental update that, while competent in its own right, fails to fundamentally change the industry to the same degree as its predecessor.

  3. Though it cannot be 100% confirmed I am pretty sure the Blackmagic Production Camera uses a sensor supplied by CMOSIS, which if true would be very good news as it is the latest technology and already in mass production. Here are your sensor questions answered... Read the full article here

  4. I'm looking forward to BMPC as a greenscreen camera, but this woman from BM forum is giving a very strange and uncertain answer about how well the BMPC compressed RAW footage will key.     She should be saying "You will get rock solid keys", not "should be keyable".   Is this a cause for concern?

  5. GH2 is the best non-RAW camera out there for the price if you're after a narrative film look. The hacked footage it gives is incredible, and I'm never selling mine, ever.

  6. From my years in audio, PLL is phase locked loop, and in short, it's a way of removing noise (as in junk data) from conversion stages (analogue to digital, like light to digits or electrical signals produced by audio into digits). I assume its the same here...

  7. Hmmm...     Kinda looks like this: http://www.baesystems.com/article/BAES_155306/bae-systems-ultra-low-noise-imaging-sensor-headed-to-scientific--military-markets http://ccdcmos.com/products/cameras/scientific/CIS1021-sCMOS.htm   Based on the CIS2051 (which is 5,5 megapixel, so could be the BMCC sensor?)   Google CIS1021: Found a 42 page pdf about it: http://alliedscientificpro.com/wp-content/uploads/MAN-0103-CIS1021-Datasheet_RevA.pdf     What do you think?   /Edit: Or this one: http://fairchildimaging.com/catalog/focal-plane-arrays/scmos/cis-1910f

  9. One of the factors limiting frame rates is the overall bandwidth that the camera can handle. Red used to rate things RedCode 28, RedCode 36, RedCode 42, etc., with the number signifiying the approximate overall data rate in megabytes per second. Assuming the sensor could handle a particular higher frame rate, either each frame had to be compressed more or the RedCode number had to increase. Of course, due to a number of factors, there was a  maximum a model could reach without overheating or otherwise failing.   If the same is true of BMD's 4K camera, why won't they consider a lossy compression format like CineForm RAW? By reducing the data per frame, more frames per second should theoretically be possible, and at 12 bits, the CMV12000 can do 90 fps.

  11. Shot the following this weekend as part of the Sci-Fi London 48 Hour Film Challenge. It's a bit rough and I wish I'd had a little time to apply some NR to the Driftwood hack as it doesn't compress too well.   https://vimeo.com/63554916   Shot on GH2, Bolex 16/32/1.5x using Canon FD 35/2 and 50/1.4. One scene (lift) shot with Tokina 11-16 and given a 2.40 matte. Settings -2,-2,-2,-2 Moon Trial 5. Used mix of natural daylight and Arri Blonde / Redhead with 1-stop CTB.   Few straight out of camera (1.5x stretch in PS and to jpg) stills too:

  14. As much as i'm loving the new camera.... You shouldn't keep wheeling out the "$36k" specs thing.   The F55 has: at least, 2 stops more DR 4K/60p 2k/240p Much better low light Much better I/Os Much better features (dual recording, better codec choices etc etc) Much better ergonomics   The 4K BMCC is not even spec'd better than RED Scarlet (though, does have global shutter).   Stear clear of hype.... It's a bargain, an amazing bargain that will change the indie scene..... but it is not on par with the highest end cameras... Not by a long way.

  16. Didn't see anything as far as a new M43 camera with cine production in mind. Kind of a bummer.

  17.   Yes and no.  From a practical standpoint, the tough magnesium body is a welcome addition.  The battery is amazing at over 3 hours for such a tiny thing.  The LCD panel swings out and has very accurate color, good for low/high shots for run-n-gun situations.  And although not RAW, the codec is very stable and delivers good quality.  I see the GH3 dropping in price dramatically, but don't count it out.  It could easily work together with the Pocket Cinema Camera.

  18. Let's hope he's right.   Where did you find the info on the website ? Looked everywhere, was not able to find anything. The only hint I get is the VISUALLY lossless wording they using on the BMPC and not for the other camera - this is pure marketing wording.   Christine Peterson from Blackmagic on the forums : It's visually lossless, a very slight compression.   So right now, I prefer believing Adobe specs on DNG than Blackmagic wording - and the only "visually lossless" compression that is not lossless is the 8bit JPEG.   So like I said, there could always be some new specs that could be published soon with a 12bit log "visually lossless" compression. Right now, there is not.   Like I wrote on the Adobe forum 6 months ago,  I really hope that Adobe would update the specs to include something better than 8bit Jpeg and that was before the BMPC. I now hope even more that Adobe will do it.

  19.   Congratulations sir :)   I have also pre-ordered the Pocket Camera as well as the 4K beast.   Now the dilemma is what to do with my existing M43 BMCC preorder, on which I have a £500 deposit down. I honestly don't need the camera and can't see a shipping date any time soon. Likely it will arrive close to July, by which time the other cameras will make it obsolete. But THEN there is the risk that the new cameras will suffer delays too. As for my existing EF mount BMCC, I need to make a decision whether or not to let that go or to keep hold, because it is now essentially made redundant by all 3!

  22. Looks like the PCC will be my next camera, instead of Nikon D5200 or GH3 :)   Nice upgrade from the GH2, but will keep my RX100 - 2 tiny cams in the bag!! yes

  23. Sorry Sony, Canon, Panasonic, and Red.  Any new announces at NAB are now irrelevant.  Blackmagic has stolen the show again.  My Panasonic GH2 is now GH through and I welcome the pocket cinema camera with open arms.

  27. It's impressive and I've worked in 16mm for 30 years and it'll be great to be able to use 16mm cine zoom lenses.  But honestly, can't someone take them aside and show them what a camera looks like?  Absolutely terrible form factor.  No viewfinder for shooting in daylight and maintaining focus.  No XLR connectors or a small auxiliary connector for input from a mixer.

  28. 1. Shoots slow mo 2. Bigger sensor 3. Takes photos   If you want to take photos with the M43 lenses you use with your BMPCC, and get the bonus of a decent B cam that can be used for slow motion work, then yes.  But it needs a price drop yesterday.   Although, let's not forget that if you're so inclined, you can go to a store and take home a GH3 today. BMD have a lot to prove.

    New Blackmagic Camera

Blackmagic just exposed (again) the entire camera industry. This is what Panasonic should have done to beat Canon and Sony, but didn't even bother to try. I hope they can manage demand better this time around. We need them to.   This is history in the making. I'll buy one when it's available. I can wait.
