I win! https://uk.webuy.com/product-detail/?id=sdigpandcgx800bob&categoryName=cameras-compact-system&superCatName=electronics&title=panasonic-lumix-dc-gx800-(body-only)-b 4K for £135 But this got me thinking as well... What if we have a fun "EOSHD Challenge" where we all trawl the bargain bins in our local towns and online, pick something for super cheap, could be $50, $100, no more than $150... Make a video with it. Then the winner is judged in a poll - on artistic merit, and technical image quality (can be 1080p of course) The winner, wins the camera of the last place guy 😉 Plus a special bonus camera from EOSHD. What do you think? Worth setting up a challenge like this?

By the way, one slight drawback here is the price variation in different markets. Most notably in Sweden where some of the prices I've seen him get gear for means that @Mattias Burling might well end up shooting his $150 entry on an Alexa

Yes it will be on Kickstarter. I understand the apprehension about Kickstarter to be honest but rest assured nothing of mine will ever be going on there until it is ready to go from a functionality point of view, which both this and the small one already more or less are. The problems with Kickstarter invariably happen when it is being used to fund development rather than just funding production. I'll put up a small video when time allows next week to show both of them in operation. The small one has another trick (or two) up its sleeve that I'll also show in the video.

    Blind Color Science Test

You're welcome! Video is tricky and colour and colour science is especially tricky because it's a very very deep subject. The main levels I see in colour are: Use camera on full-auto in standard colour profile, don't adjust in post Dial in a profile to get the results you want in-camera, maybe using a grey-card and maybe not Shoot log using a grey-card and grade in post using LUTs and basic adjustments Grade manually without relying on LUTs to do the work Professional colourists I also hang out on liftgammagain.com which is aimed at professional colourists and in many ways the gap in skill level and knowledge between 3 and 5 (or even 4 and 5) is larger than the gap between 1 and 3. If you're curious to have a tiny taste of what a professional colourist skill level might be like, check out Juan Melara on YT. It's a fundamentally different kind of skill level. Here's a couple of videos to get you started: In talking to the professional colourists I've come to understand that the world of Hollywood and the real pros has basically no overlap with the YT world - if all you know is YT then you've never seen a glimpse of how that other world works, with the only exception I know of being Juan Melara. I'm happy to point you to other resources where pros hang out if you're curious. In this sense I appreciate that you're torn between people that haven't got a clue how little they know and probably complain about anything resembling work, and those with more knowledge criticising you for not catering to a more informed audience.

I just received my EM1 Mkii from B&H used department and immediately loaded V3 on it. I am using the Panasonic 12-35mm f2.8 and the autofocus performs flawlessly. As good as Canon Dual Pixel AF IMO and more reliable than the Nikon Z6. I love the colors on the camera and I feel the size of this body is just perfect. THIS is what I wanted. The EM1X was overpriced and always having a grip made it unnecessarily bulky for a MFT camera. Going to do a review on this new setup soon. I feel the upcoming Panasonic Leica 10-25mm f1.7 paired with this camera will be my go to "YouTuber" camera for a while. I love the color science and IBIS is magical. Only thing "missing" is a good 120fps mode...which I can just get with my Z6 when I occasionally need it. So for now my current setup is this: 1DC on a tripod in my studio setup for that 4K MJPG Canon Log. EM1 Mkii for vlog style, run and gun shooting. Nikon Z6 for 120fps and run and gun shooting/ backup cam. Leica Q (which I just picked up used for a steal) pictures of my kid and everyday life/ instagram shots.

I usually don’t like to say negative things on forums that are not constructive but this video of Gerald... « c’est chaud ! » 😱 as I would say in french. I have to agree with webrunner5 on this one. It’s ugly as shit. Even the artistic choice argument is barely acceptable here. It’s a shame because it’s the first time he takes some risks to express his artistic/technical skills and I appreciate the effort. Maybe it has to do with the fact it was his first time with the camera... Boy, I have to say something nice now, I don’t want to turn into webrunner5

Tomato/Tomato to some degree but as he has stated it was a deliberate "artistic choice" for it to look like that then it was the technical choices that had to serve the aesthetic rather than than the aesthetic being a by-product of the technical choices. I learnt this lesson the hard way when failing to achieve a Kraftwerk aesthetic on my last album by using a mandolin and a French horn. Well, as I say, he's impressed quite a lot of people with that choice judging by the comments, many of whom find it to be very evocative for them of the work of Philip Bloom. I'm not really au fait enough with the entire canon of Bloom's work to know whether he ever had a Handycam period so I don't have sufficient insight to challenge that.

    Why is Canon SO Frustrating?!

6D Mark II is not cinema for me. There is a 1080p frame grab, look at it full screen and it screams digital. Lack of dynamic range, mushy codec, in many ways a step back from even the old 6D. Terrible detail that doesn't pop. Now compare to an X-T3 frame I pulled from Vimeo... World of difference. Details pops, three dimensionally, film like dynamic range and colour. Even if you don't care about 4K delivery, it's a world of difference between a shitty Canon DSLR and a top of the range 2019 mirrorless camera.

TechArt Pro Sony E To Nikon Z Adapter

If he made an L mount version of the original AF adapter I think he could probably name his price with SL/CL/TL owners to get AF capability with their M lenses. Conspiracy theorist in me suspects thats why Leica shit on the MC21 compatibility as an adapter like that exposes a bit too much that would enable reverse engineering. I need to resume my pin blanking experiments with the MC21 and the SL but from the ones I did its pretty clear its just a simple lockout based on the ID returned by the lens not being in the camera's list, hence why they had to do a firmware update after Panasonic released their lenses and presumably will have to for every new lens as well. So if we could find a way to inject the ID of a lens that it DOES have in its list via the MC21's return line then we could spoof it into working

A quick peek at one of the expansion options for the PBC. This one is focus controller where the focus range of the lens is mapped to one full turn of the control. Obviously, ignore the electrical tape thats holding it together. The production version will be using gaffer tape.

I think the camera should remain secret until after the vote. When doing camera side by sides we all know people vote for the one that should be best if presented with their identities. If there was a max budget for camera+lens+mic+what have you, then speed boosters should be fine.

Out of my cold dead hands!! So a quick summary of the rules then... 1. Under £150/150euros/$150, to make it simple. I think that also rules out ProRes and 4K but if you genuinely find a camera like that under the price limit, fair play. So I am allowing 4K and better codecs, if you can get em. 2. Proof of purchase receipt. Can be recent. You do not need to buy another camera, but it does have to be within the past 6 months and under $150. 3. No Magic Lantern RAW... It would thrash everything else and make the contest a bit boring. 4. Lens has to be "reasonably priced" and you can only use one. Choose wisely from your existing stuff. I will catch you if you use an Otus. 5. Use whatever else you like, in terms of cards, etc. 6. Tripod or handheld only - so no fancy rigs or sliders. 7. No fancy lights. 8. No fancy actors. 9. You can use slow-mo, if your camera does 60p for example 10. No fancy lens adapters like an expensive Speed Booster 11. Declare your camera (post pictures of it) in the competition thread (once competition has started) 12. In the final video, upload to YouTube or Vimeo with description of what mode you shot in and codec (i.e. 1080p 24p / 720p 60p / etc.) THE GOAL It's a cinematography and mood challenge, to make your camera look AS GOOD AS POSSIBLE. I don't really care about the story or message, although if you want to do one that's fine as well and it may serve the images nicely. Sound can be anything you like - but I'd prefer some emotional attachment with the pictures. It enhances the cinematography and mood a LOT if you get it right. Everything else is up to you. No time limit. No editing limitations, you can use a LUT, colour grade, warp stabilisation, slow-mo, etc. if you think it improves your piece. PRIZE I will pick a winner for the main prize, and there will also be a forum vote for the most popular video. I'll reveal the prize after the entries are in. Would love to do a photography one of these some time as well, in collaboration with another forum member - maybe @Mattias Burling ? Who is in, and who agrees with the 10 rules? Any suggestions welcome. For the start of the competition, please wait for the main blog post... Maybe in a few days, or this weekend. In the mean time... happy shopping / dusting off It's still in the spirit of the challenge if you find a camera as good as that for under $150. I doubt you can though. Remember though, it's the cinematography that matters as well... You can easily make a 4K camera look worse than a much cheaper one if the shooting technique isn't nice
  22. 3 points
Oh I don’t know. Internal NDs, built in XLRs, servo-zoom options (programmed to digital zoom or focus like the LS300). I’d much rather go s35 with those features than FF without them. Then you have codecs etc. JVC already have ProRes in their cameras, so it’s reasonable to assume this one will too.

    Why is Canon SO Frustrating?!

I'd advocate Canon for stills. Even when my wife had a 700d, her images smoked my Sony A6/A7 whatever just from pure image rendering. nearly every photographer I work with uses Canon. For video though, even though they have a few of industry leading features (reliability, DPAF, colour) - they've fallen way out of favour in the UK. Nearly everyone in the low and mid tier are shooting on Sony or Panasonic. Some Blackmagic. My local rental house has had to sell on their C300 II's because no one wants them. This is all because, and you can't deny it, that their video pipeline is an absolute mess. From the C700 bazooka to the immensely crippled EOS R - barley anyone wants them for video here because they lack features that Canon could easily include. They could wipe the floor in the sub-£10k market if they gave the C200 a 10bit (non-RAW) codec and better 120fps. But that camera has a major split personality and it puts potential buyers off (like me, who went for the EVA1 instead). Additionally, as most professionals own A,B and C cameras - their video lineup is a mess here too. Panasonic lead the way here and this to me is a huge selling point. There's no doubt you can create stunning images with whatever Canon - but their decisions in video features have had a severe impact on their universal attraction (for video in the UK). To the point of the post, they are SO frustrating because we all have a soft spot for them, and want them to deliver what we want. But they won't, and probably never will.

    Interesting new Cinema Camera Concepts

While a lot of very capable camera companies apart from the Major Players are now entering the affordable cinema camera market, it's always nice to have more players, more choice of cameras and more options for sensors, codecs etc. This one seems interesting, but right now the codecs are very heavy for a budget cinema camera with no compressed RAW option. Also, these will release some time next year, so the wait could be long (new entrants have delays, more often I guess). Hopefully they will have some great sensor options (in addition to the ones they already have) and superb codecs, by the time these hit the market. Ah yes, and great prices. https://www.newsshooter.com/2019/06/19/octopus-camera-open-platform-with-swappable-sensors/

Its for focus control. Unlike the small Record Start/Stop one, this one can control all the parameters as well as monitor them. It also has the multiple recallable Aperture/ISO/Shutter/Temp/Tint memory slots functionality from my app. The focus controller works with native MFT lenses and EF lenses on Metabones smart adapters and has adjustable rotation range (i.e. how many complete turns it takes to go from minimum focus to infinity) and one shot AF by pressing the wheel in. As per my app it has storable focus points with the option to instantly switch or with a selectable transition rate. The big difference with this though is that there is also a manual option where you control the transition with the wheel. Internal battery recharged by USB and can also be used while being charged that way too. Time from switch on to connected and controlling the camera is around 3 seconds so a lot quicker than an app. Haha....it was just a quick picture to show @Andrew Reid that it is daylight viewable. It is actually a terrible marketing picture for my balcony wall cleaning skills though !

I'm still trying to find a supplier for the e-ND that can make a larger piece so slightly back burnered at the moment while I concentrate on other things. The electronic part does work in concert with my other controllers such as this one (and the app as well actually) so when it happens it will be integrated. Currently, the size of the glass that I have is only really suitable for in mount versions, which is a bit of an issue with cameras such as the P4K which relies on speed boosters. Anyway, I've just done a quick and dirty pic (literally when you see the finger prints all over the glass) to illustrate what the build along would have been with the smaller piece. I used the MicroBit as the controller (in an electric blue DIY case obviously) as its cheap and easy to program for everyone (although I would obviously provide the source code) so at its very, very basic component level this is how it works and you could finesse it from there in terms of housing etc. and not using croc cables to connect it! In this version you just use the two buttons to increment and decrement the ND level as seen here at 0%, 50% and 90% reduction although you can scale it anyway you want. Another advantage of the MicroBit is that it has a very simple Bluetooth link function so you can use a second one to remote control it. When I source the bigger piece, I'll put it up properly but thought it might be interesting to you in terms of how it works as it will be exactly the same simple principle but bigger! I'm actually pondering a mechanical version of it at this point though.... As a man who's latest phone purchase was a Blackberry I'm not sure ahead of my time is that accurate Wait till you see what this one does.....

Unlike the camera itself Yeah but their Orange is subtle. This one is more Emergency Oh My God Press That To Set The Alarm Off type of an Orange. I have two EOS M's and have had two 5D2's, the 5D is cleaner than the EOS M without the speedbooster at high ISOs. Pop a speedbooster on the EOS M and then they're pretty close with the 5D slightly at the upper hand. Honestly, I don't get the point of shooting at high ISO's (unless it's your base ISO e.g. 800). If you must shoot in the dark, just use some cheap lights, an iphone screen or something and then add de-noising and it's fine.

Already ordered an EM1 Mkii from B&H....gonna do a vid about it! I think this is now going to be a way better option for people than the EM1X...WAY cheaper. Paid $1,100 for it used. If the AF is as good as the EM1X there is no reason to get the EM1X for video...other than the limited 120fps mode. EM1 Mkii may be the best option for solo content creators who want best bang for buck in both price and size.

Everyone should try a gorilla pod for handheld video... It gives you four points of contact on the body. 2 legs of the pod are on your chest or lower shoulder area, the 3rd leg acts as a handle. The 4th contact point is the EVF of the camera held to the eye. When you try this, you wonder if you even need IBIS. IBIS is making us lazy and its floaty. I am going to shoot a test where I use an X-T3 with the pod, and compare it to X-H1 with IBIS bare bones... See which looks most cinematic and steady. Obviously the pod isn't going to provide dolly in the sky like movements, but it replicates the look of a steady shoulder rig on the cheap and easy

Possible further insight into the Canon's inner workings... Canon represented as the woman, Bill as the filmmaker:
  46. 2 points
    Andrew Reid

    Fujifilm X-T30?

Something about this logic doesn't add up. The reason you get an X-T30 instead of an X-T3 is for the smaller size and lower price. So wouldn't it make more sense to add a LARGE and EXPENSIVE external recorder to the X-T3 instead? Doesn't seem to stop Gerald doing a dump on it though, even though he's yet another YouTuber with more money than common sense. Of course the smaller body size limits it thermally, it's very powerful hardware cramped into a smaller space so that's to be expected. It's got the 4K recording time limits for a reason. In other news... https://www.fujifilm.com/support/digital_cameras/software/firmware/x/xt30/index.html They fixed the Q button. None of the Fuji hipster designers used the camera after drawing it with their Apple pencils. Good job real engineers exist to save the day!

Oh man, Fuji is doing 4K video from a 100MP sensor. Canon is doing a cropped readout from a 30MP sensor. There are no excuses for high rolling shutter on the EOS R. Also, the video above @DBounce is an utterly useless waste of 10 minutes with the camera and proves nothing. I can't find the rolling shutter test in it, maybe you can suggest the timestamp to save us having to watch the hole 10 minutes of badly shot focus pulsing.

There's probably never been a better time to do it, because now you can get almost every piece of equipment to run on batteries. @tupp was right about gases and stuff, which is a really huge deal if you're trying to run a generator down there, but hello 2019 and its cheap LED lights and affordable high-ISO see-in-the-dark cameras! That leaves dealing with the authorities and working out what they will or won't do. It might be a good idea to ask around who has done such things before, as it's possible that they really don't like people making scary cave movies because they think it will scare tourists away, or maybe they like scary cave movies because scary movies are popular and people will come to the caves for excitement or whatever, you never know. I saw a great film once about homeless people living in a subway station and they got permission from (IIRC) the polish rail department to film there with the criteria that the final film must begin with a statement from the rail people, so it did. The first 3 minutes of the film was a portly gentleman from the rail department reading a statement about how the rail department wants to reassure the public that homeless people don't live in the subway and that it's clean and everyone should use it and that they are proud to support the arts, all while looking like he's completely terrified to be on camera. It was great! Can't remember the name of the film, but it was a first feature and it was really good, so if someone can remember then please let us know
