Cinematic and photographic lenses for the Sony NEX 5N and FS100 – Part 1

The NEX 5N’s APS-C sensor behind a mirrorless mount opens up some new possibilities when it comes to adapting lenses for video.

In part 1 I will cover recommended adapters and small walk-around street photography lenses which don’t compromise the compact size of the NEX 5N as a b-roll cam and digital rangefinder. There’s only one Sony pancake at the moment and it’s not very good so these are the answer.

In part 2 I will cover the larger standard SLR primes.

Optimising the Sony NEX 5N for cinematic video

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/28917812[/vimeo]

Pacifica by Marlon Torres

Sony have made a splash with their first credible video DSLR, the NEX 5N. In my view I still prefer the GH2’s image – Panasonic knocked the image processing into a different league for a DSLR on that and the hack furthers it – but the 5N has a very good sensor and a new processor. Out of the box it looks very electronic though. Here’s how to tune it.

Anamorphic shoulder rig with Half Inch Rails handlebar

New 2nd edition of the EOSHD Anamorphic Shooter’s Guide is now available, click here to read more!

I haven’t seen very many documentaries, TV shows or news reportage shot with anamorphic lenses. Some of this work of course isn’t suited to a cinema aesthetic – but some projects would really benefit from it. I have assembled a quick to use anamorphic ENG rig for handheld footage.

How to put your DSLR movie on iTunes

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/22111423[/vimeo]

For Lovers Only is a French New Wave inspired no-budget film shot on the 5D Mark II by The Polish Brothers and it sells for $14.99 on iTunes. A beautiful black & white portrayal of a couple as they fall deeper in love. It has zero marketing budget, zero distribution budget and a crew of three, two of whom are the stars.

GH2 hack footage – 42Mbit AVCHD 1080/24p

[vimeo]http://www.vimeo.com/26611738[/vimeo]

The GH2 is already a lot of bang for the buck. This hack has made it a bonafide plastic explosive!

In the latest hack released today Vitaliy has enabled high bitrate AVCHD in 1080/24p cinema mode for the first time. These represent the first image quality improvements for the hacked GH2. What does it look like? Watch the video above to find out.

EOSHD Myth Busters Part 1 – Forget HDR – It’s about tonality

This is the first in a new series of articles dispelling current ‘trends, myths and sacred cows’ in digital video.

Currently it’s trendy to tune cameras for more dynamic range. We have CineStyle for DSLRs, HDRx for RED and S-Log for the Sony F3… the list goes on. I feel the technique has overtaken the artist, the gimmick has triumphed over substance and we are operating in a world of myths and plastic looking images.

GH2 hack footage – 4:3 MJPEG for true LOMO anamorphic 2.66:1 cinemascope

[vimeo]http://vimeo.com/26115801[/vimeo]

Learn all about anamorphic shooting – the EOSHD book is now on eBay for just $19.99

The new GH2 hack is in its very early stages but has a helluva cool feature for anamorphic shooting. I thought I’d try it out.

One of Vitaliy’s initial patches puts MJPEG video into a 4:3 aspect ratio, the same as 35mm film.

I can then use a 2x anamorphic lens to convert that to lovely 2.66:1 cinemascope rather than the ‘too wide’ 3.55:1 you get from normal 16:9!

Quality follow focus just became affordable

Value for money follow focus for $142!! Aluminium construction.
Buy it now

Look carefully at the design of this – it’s brilliant for the price.

They say that good design costs nothing, but manufacturing and tooling certainly does. Here, the manufacturers of this follow focus, JIN Finance are at an advantage. You probably already have a JIN Finance product because they were the original builders of aluminium lens adapters for Micro Four Thirds. Everything from Canon FD to Contax Zeiss they made and sold since before the GH1 was released, and I still use their adapters today. They haven’t worn out!
