2 New footage and test of the $995 Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera

The Blackmagic Micro Cinema Camera is the not-quite-a-replacement for the Pocket Cinema Camera. Although lacking the ready to shoot straight out of the box form factor of that camera, the new model adds a switchable rolling shutter / global shutter mode as well as high frame rates. 10bit ProRes, 12bit RAW and 13+ stop dynamic range for $995 round out the spec.

0 Panasonic LX100 first impressions review and 4K footage

For those who find video very lacking on small cameras especially the Fuji X100S and X100T, Panasonic now have a high end retro-styled compact with 4K video. The sensor and EVF come from the GX7, which in turn is quite close to the GH4 in performance terms. We are talking a gigantic sensor here for a compact, larger even than the 1″ sensor of the Sony RX100 M3. As well as…

0 Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera Review – Part 1 – Worth the hype?

“The Pocket” is a polarising camera. It’s as tempting to rave about the camera as it is to criticise it for obvious shortcomings. However – bottom line is that this is an extraordinary tool. It is 90% of what I loved about the Blackmagic Cinema Camera without the bulk and strange form factor. In my mind it replaces the Panasonic GH2 as the cult favourite of prosumer video because it has…

0 Blackmagic Cinema Camera Review – DSLR killer?

A version of this review will appear in the UK edition of Mac User magazine. Check out the subscription here This review is based on the final retail model (not a pre-production camera or loan unit). The Blackmagic Cinema Camera is the most Apple-like camera I have ever used,…

One of the highlights of Photokina 2012 was meeting up with SLR Magic, the small but nimble optics company based in Hong Kong. Now they are building high end super-fast primes which are optimised for filmmakers as well as photographers.

0 John Brawley posts new Blackmagic Cinema Camera footage

Please note the compression and noise is from Vimeo not the camera John Brawley has some new Blackmagic footage for us. Unfortunately Vimeo streams 1080p at something like 7Mbit and John has no download option on this clip, so watching Blackmagic footage when it is so heavily compressed rather defeats the object of such a lovely 12bit raw camera. Nevertheless dynamic range and resolution are looking pretty good.

0 Olympus OM-D E-M5 Review

Journey – by Andrew Reid Does the new OM-D E-M5 manage to produce a GH2 style virtuoso performance in video mode? I have to say there are some question marks over that – but as a stills camera it is now my absolute number one choice against some very tough competition – the 5D Mark III, Fuji X Pro 1 and Sony NEX 7.

0 Panasonic GH2 vs 5D Mark III

Today I shot this comparison between the 5D Mark III and hacked Panasonic GH2 with EOSHD Unified Patch. The results are all in the video. Now you just need to factor in overall aesthetics to your decision, which are important. Personally I’d say that full frame sensor aside there is no reason why I like the 5D Mark III’s cinematic image more than the GH2’s. But I do need a full…

0 Sony NEX 7 – Review

Minimum viewing recommendations: 40″ TV. Download the MP4 file. The NEX 7 is a beautifully designed high end mirrorless camera with probably the most advanced CMOS sensor Sony have ever produced. As a stills camera it is superb (if you don’t mind adapting glass and manually focussing – because the current E-mount lens range is somewhat limited). But does it topple the Panasonic GH2 and Canon 5D Mark II for…
