--A spanish fairy tale--

Personal Note: Evolucion was inspired by the theory of evolution and a stuffed animal named Clyde that was given to me as a child.

Technical: Now that I'm using a GH1 instead of the HV30, I wanted to make a short film that intercut the two... farewell to the HV30...

Special thanks to Zac Tamburrino for being a very cooperative and patient actor:)

'Blue' created for Philip Bloom's 90 second film, weekend challenge. The task was to pick an object, film & edit a 90 second short over the weekend.

I decided to go really abstract with my fav IKEA blue LED light sculpture lamp thingy (it's basically IKEA tack but it's my fav colour & beautiful!).

This is all raw footage, no grading what so ever, just simply cut together to music. Wish I'd had my tripod but took it into work a couple of days ago to shoot a timelapse and some BA$TARD stole it. :(

Notes: I waited until dark and made sure I placed it on a reflective surface deciding on the window sill so I could get some nice bokeh of the lights of the city behind and maximise the quality of light.

Only the second time I've filmed with my Canon 550d/T2i (inspired by Philip Bloom's blog to start DSLR film making).

I was lucky enough to be able to film the BBC Philharmonic during a live performance in Salford, UK. Because of the style I wanted & also being unsure about copyright, I have not used the music of their performance (which went out live on BBC Radio 3). Instead I've used a track by Imogen Heap from her awesome new album 'Ellipse', the track is 'Between Sheets (Instrumental)'. If you get a chance to go see the BBC Philharmonic play live, do it. I didn't think I was a fan of classical music, but I was wrong! The performance gave me goosebumps, it was simply superb.

I'm thinking about getting the GH1. There have been some price drops, and it's currently available from amazon for 1150 dollars.

I'm just wondering if I should buy it now. Or if the GH2 is supposed to be so much better that I should wait for it?

Also I'm wondering if the current deals on the GH1 will continue after the launch of the GH2? I suppose so but I don't know this market that well.

Anyone got any recommendations?

Those who have followed me via Twitter, this is the first commercial series from my huge shoot in the Eastern Sierra Nevadas, California & Nevada.

We generated more than 500GBs of HDSLR footage. From run-n-gun style shooting to locked down magnificent vistas, this was an epic shoot. Not to mention it was all at above 6000ft. I wanted to post this here to show the production value of the shoot.

Special thanks to Ben Paull & Keith Brauneis, my other two camera operators for their amazing persistence to get the shot. Also, big kudos goes again to Ben Paull for helping me tackle the giant task of logging & transcoding all the footage *whew* And last but not least a HUGE thanks to Dan Mehta for scoring the piece. He is truly a great artist. Enjoy!

On october the 4th, 2009, I have filmed some material with a 30$ C-mount Cosmicar 25mm 1.8, a very small and light lens in L'herbe, a small fishermen port near Bordeaux, France. I always openned it at 1:1.8 for its particular circular bokeh, it reminds me pictures from my Lomo Olga. It's a lens for security camera.

Then almost 1 year later, on august the 8th, 2010, I went back to l'Herbe, but with my new 30$ Fujian CCTV C-mount 35mm 1.7, no vignetting there, but you have a "tilt shift effect" because of the lens' poor quality :)

Between those two dates, the GH1 hacked firmware have appeared.
This is a comparison between those two cheap CCTV lenses, and the Panasonic / hacked firmware, in the same place, with my same (oldest ;) daughter.

1- GH1 720P PAL (Panasonic Firmware)
30$ C-mount Computar TV lens 25mm always @ 1:1.8 for its particular circular bokey
400 to 100 asa, shutter from 100 to 4000 to keep it wide open

2- GH1 720P NTSC (hacked firmware)
Fujian CCTV C-mount 35mm always @ 1:1.7 for its particular tilt shift effect
400 to 100 asa, shutter from 100 to 4000 to keep it wide open

Edited on Premiere CS5
No color correction

You can watch the original 2009 Cosmicar movie here :
and another Fujian/hacked movies here:
Hacked firmware from Tester13
"AVCHD STABLE POUR 720P
Selon jobless
Video bitrate adjustment - 38000000
Overall bitrate adjustment - 40000000
Limiting bitrate adjustment - 42000000"
Since I've hacked my GH1, two mains problems have appeared :
1- I can't edit anymore on Premiere CS5 (on a Mac Book Pro unibody end 2008 with 4 Go of RAM), there is too much bit rate for native editing, so I have to edit with FCP trough "Log and transfert" in Apple Pro Res
2- I can't shoot on 720P under 60 shutter speed because of awfull mud problems.... Wich is a problem when I want to have more light...
