I read somewhere that panasonic are changing the shape of the GH3 and going with a smaller slim line build, no grip, NO GRIP, if they do that I'm going to canon. The GH3 needs to be a tank. (ish)

I wish! I'm currently looking for my first cam for video. Avoiding the Canons for now (moire/aliasing/etc) and have been really considering a GH2 and a Nikon lens or 2 to start with.

I suspect a GH3 won't be available until next year. Of course, if I buy a GH2 in the next month or so, the GH3 will come out 31 days later - too late to return it :P

I've seen several user requests both on this site and others to reduce the megapixel count for Panasonic cameras like the GH2.

Speaking from a niche field most people are unaware of, I couldn't disagree more. While I don't think MORE megapixels are needed, the GH2 is right on the edge of effectiveness for doing low-cost, high-speed digital archiving using either Atiz-like setups (http://www.atiz.com) or DIY archiving setups (http://www.diybookscanner.org). 18mp cameras like the Canon 7D/60D/T2i line can comfortably handle two 8.5" x 11" pages per shot in a book cradle at 300dpi, while the GH2 can handle one of those pages, or two of them if the 1" borders alongside the content are precisely shaved off within the shot setup before shooting.

Dropping the GH2 to 12-14mp would kill it for the archiving market since the opportunity cost of having to digitize content would double, e.g., taking on shot per page instead of 1 per 2 pages. As a GH2 lover and operator who shoots stills, does filming, and archives books and documents, I hope they don't drop a single pixel. :-)

Right. But we are talking a progressive real-time live image from a progressive CMOS sensor here. Not pre-recorded video on a TV. I hardly think 120hz in an EVF is interpolated. If there is that possibility, then do please forgive me - I tend to keep my best knowledge for the stuff that actually matters.

"To drive the faster refresh rate and a 3MP EVF, the camera will need to produce a live video feed of at least 2048 x 1536 (4:3) or 2208 x 1248 (2.8MP in 16:9) at 60fps to the viewfinder. Possibly even as high as 120fps to match the refresh rate of the panel. Modern LCDs usually refresh at 120hz (like TVs and their anti-cinematic ‘smoothing’ modes)."
Not true on any counts. To achieve 120 Hz, TVs repeat frames or interpolate them. Obviously, the programs viewed on a 120-Hz set aren't, for the most part, shot at 60 fps, and certainly not at 120 fps. And most LCDs are 60 Hz.

(Editing posts: yes initially, but after 5 minutes edit functionality gets locked to avoid people back tracking on what they say. Did the initial edit button show up just after posting your comment? That will allow for corrections. Let me know if it is not working).

Build of the white GF1 is really nice and solid. Not sure why the flagship is worse... Something for Panasonic to figure out for themselves I guess.

Aluminium isn't very heavy and polycarbonite fibre plastic is pretty good too... Lots of choices out there without increasing weight.

(any way to edit posts on the new system Andrew)?

Build quality on the GH is a double-edged sword. When I recently finally got my GH2's, I was appalled by the build quality - they felt like toys. Then I briefly got a GF1 (to get a cheap 20mm pancake) - awesome design & build. OK - but if they'd done that on the GH2 with its bigger body, it would have been _heavy_. Not ideal for a camera that competes with DSLRs on size and weight.

Maybe there's a happy medium...

The reason is because general mirrorless sales (GF1, EP1, NEX etc.) in the US are terrible relative to other regions, so Panasonic allocated masses of GH2 to Europe, the UK and Asia, short-stocking the US. But I see from my visitor stats that the biggest interest in the GH2 is in the US, the niche it fits into is biggest in that region. Filmmakers and video hobbyists. I can go into any shop in the UK or Germany and see one sat on the shelves doing nothing, whilst in the US people are crying out for them!

They don't even learn from past mistakes - was exactly the same with the GH1. Baffling!
