Canon Rumors says GH4 competitor will be fixed lens in smaller C100 style body

Looking up "XC10", what I'm seeing doesn't sound that exciting to me. A fixed lens 1" sensor that is targeting the Sony PXW-X70? For me, a 1" sensor could be interesting if the fixed lens is fast, but if the lens is like what's found on the Sony, not at all interested. Of course it's all just rumors so who knows.

I agree. If it has a fast lens, then it may be interesting if it gets everything else right.   Which would be good built in nd's, a large zoom range, good stabilisation (cant imagine it not having this), c log, a good viewfinder, good audio, compact, low roling shutter, and the same kind of cost bracket of the gh4.     All that and more seems a lot for canon to get right, but it's not imposible.

In 2010, before 4k was still mostly unknown, Canon was showing off with a 4K "All purpose" with smallish 8mp chip and a fixed L designated 7-140mm 1.8-3.8. 24-480mm in 35mm terms. It did 4K at 60p.

The specs and general outline seems very similar to rumored fixed-lens 4K camcorder, but of course in 5 years time that prototype has probably been improved upon for the upcoming release. For instance no Cards in 2010 were able to sustain 4K bandwidth so the camera was recording to an external harddrive, a problem that will be fixed easily in the release. The camera had a sensor slightly smaller than 1" so perhaps the sensor size/technology will be improved to a better 1" 8mp sensor instead on a 2/3" 8mp one, or maybe it's the same. The body had a mini-c100 style with a dslr grip, but clearly has been improved by putting more buttons on there, it had an excellent evf and the LCD from the xf305.

We might likely get this lens

and overally like to get a tweaked production-ready version (more buttons, more xf-look) of what we see here. A 1"ish 4K 8mp c100-like camcorder, with a fixed Canon L zoom lens equiv. to a 28-400mm or something long for "news" coverage. A good concept but far from a GH4 rival, which strangely Canon sees as a news camera...

If this Canon thing is a 1" sensor, fast (F1.2 - F1.8) quality glass (with minimal distortion, or does distortion-correction in camera like Sony's G series lenses), 4K @ 60FPS in 10bit C-Log, for under $1500, I'll consider it for shits and giggles.

It will kind of be what the fixed-lens RED Scarlet was gonna be...

They have to choose between fast and pretty (1.2/1.4) OR a long reach versatile lens with a standard speed. Since Canon is calling it for ''news' and based on the prototype earlier, they'll probably go with a normal speed 24-200/300mm). In short, this probably wont be the camera for extreme shallow DOF, beauty shots with flares, extreme lowlight and such and such. It will probably be very un-interesting for a narrative filmmaker and sexy to a news/event shooter. Think Sony X70 and RX10.
