New 1D C firmware update

1D C owners have to send their camera to a Canon service station because they don't want to release the firmware to the public domain.

Now you may ask why...

It seems the only obvious answer is they don't want Magic Lantern getting the firmware and putting 4K on the 1D X.

This proves more than ever to me that the 1D X and 1D C are essentially the same thing.

Just been reading up on it and I don't think ML would bother as they think those who can afford the 1dx could afford the 1dc that there would be few users and the threat Canon would sue.
One difference cited are the 1dc has better heatsinks for 4k which compresses video at about 7.1 However the 1dx could be hacked to do uncompressed raw Although would anyone be able to afford the cf cards with a 128gb card lasting 7mins and costing £500.
I guess you need the compression and that could be tricky for ML that could also lead to overheating issues.

I guess Magic Lantern's attitude is that the 1D series just ain't the Volks Wagen, hacking %D makes sense, but stepping up to those super expensive bodies they risk legal trouble.

Raw development basically sold me a 5D MKiii, so Canon shouldn't be sad about that, but I think if a 1D got hacked you may see a change in attitude... because as we've seen, they're pretty much the same thing.

JG. Yes but maybe not.

The 1DC is coming to the end of its life now as are all Canons 8 bit pro offerings so maybe this could be a good thing for them if ML did hack the camera. Whose to say ML are not helped by canon because as you say you bought the 5d3 because of the hack. Maybe Canons help could be by advising ML its okay to now hack the 1DX.

Canon have made a lot of money over these hacks So did Panasonic over the GH2. Not only that but they manage to keep there pro division separate as no serious pro anyway would use a hacked camera and risk a shoot.

A hacked 1DX would be a damn beast. All that processing power, it's a lowlight/clean iso monster, I mean..
The overcrank capability on it would be awesome also. The CF cards would be the biggest gripe, besides the price tag.
It sucks Canon had to pull out the legal card on this one. I almost pulled the trigger on it when I had the money a year ago
Because it's an amazing stills camera, and even the 8 bit video is gorgeous on it. But just like the rest of their lineup,
It could be so much more. Somebody in that company needs an enema I swear to god.

Do people still care about what Canon are/aren't doing? The 5D3 really only remains a competitor thanks to ML (let's be honest the 5D3 without ML isn't that great compared to other cameras on the market that don't need to be hacked)..

SONY is FAR more exciting
