Yi (formerly Xiaomi Yi), can be called the company that has put the final nail on GoPro's coffin, especially with its Yi 4k Camera (after the Flat Profile firmware), and much better low light.

And now it is planning on Gate Crashing the M4/3 party.

Camera prices may seriously come down, if this is true. Also, DSLR/DSLM makers may finally giving customers features they really want, instead of the limited things they offer.

Nail in the coffin?  GoPro is still light years ahead of the competition.  Protune, Cineform, flat profiles, global shutter...they had this years before people ever heard of Log.  You can shoot 4K Protune flat and export to 1080p 4:4:4 right inside GoPro studio.

Picking up ProTune was the best thing GoPro did. But that is more in the realm of professional work, and most of those features are wasted on people who don't want too much work in post (except movie makers). Also, when they picked up ProTune, people (arguably) weren't using them too much foe grading.

They should have had better low light and battery life along with other things. And STABILIZATION.

Also, GoPro prices have been the biggest cause of its Financial Downfall.

I don't want to give you the figures, you can check any source that seems reasonable. GoPro is seriously down.

Simple economics says GoPro is done if they don't make some kind of change. Why would people buy a GoPro when they could buy the Yi 4k for about half? If word gets around well enough (and with smaller products like this it usually does) GoPro will be having a very hard time this sector. DJI should also be worried I think.

Absolutely. Along with an Attached LCD Screen, along excellent touch functionality and menu. And arguably better sound (they are apparently also working on different mics for the Yi 4k).

Gopro suckled at margins with only small incremental changes as long as they could, someone like Xiaomi now has the power to crush them. The only thing that could potentially save Gopro is their name/marketing hype... are they Apple? That is the 1,000,000 dollar question (my instincts tell me they are not).

So true.

The Yi4k has a ProTune-equivalent "flat profile". And GoPro never put Cineform into its cameras, and seems to have abandoned the codec.

- Besides, there is little sense in exporting 4:4:4 video created from applying a LUT to 4:2:0 video....

The whole GoPro studio/Cineform workflow is outmoded today (at least for action cam footage) where computers have fast enough for editing the native camera footage without transcoding quality loss.

They've probably seen the Chinese Z Camera E1 by Imagine Vision Tech and the DJI Zenmuse X5(R) and went like... hum, especially now that there's Xiaomi quadcopters, why not go do something like that as well?

Yep. To be honest, I don't understand what all the excitements for...

The Z camera E1 has been out for a while now:

The only problem with tha x5r is the price.

Shoot we can even include BM Micro cams here.

The Z1 Camera seems Class Leading on Paper. But, users who have used it have a different story to tell. It's not fair to try and compare it with the Yi Company's Cameras.

The Z1 is a very early unfinished product with apparently poor customer care and after sales. Excellent Idea. Not so impressive implementation.

You need delve deeper. Since those reviews of the Z1 there has been firmware updates and a flat profile added. People that were early adopters were the ones who wrote those reviews... Much like all the blackmagic reviews. If you look at the blackmagic reviews... People are still complaining of the 2.5K RAW... Since then they've added compressed RAW update.

The BMCC was/ is a brick. And weights a ton. It's success was due to the fact that it could do RAW in something so small, at such a low price point, at 2.5k when everything a few times that price point was doing only 1080p. MagicLantern killed some of the BMCC and BMPCC customers by letting them stick to Canon.

The problem with Z1 is that while it is also apparently a Stills Camera, unlike the BlackMagics (which TBO would be superb except for its terrible autofocus and other issues), it started pretty badly, and it started through a different business route.

Maybe if the Z1 is re-introduced/ re-marketed, this time with all the Bugs sorted, they may have a fighting chance. Otherwise they go the CraftCamera route. Or another dud from IndieGogo or something.
