1. Old post but an important thread I think... How are you guys going with your IR filtration? I looked into this back in early 2014 and bought the Tiffen T1 and the Indie ND set, 0.3, 0.6, 0.9, 1.2. Last weekend I had a shoot during the day and found a shady tree I used the 1.2ND to bring it down to between f2-f4. This is on my BMCC, YI Optics speedbooster and Zeiss CF.2 28mm. So I forgot to put the T1 on :-/ I didn't notice the IR contamination on my flanders, everything looked great. Back home in Davinci I noticed the IR. We were also running around with a Pocket Camera, Olympus 12mm and a 1.2ND and there's IR on that footage. It's not completely lost I can salvage most of it, sort of, but it caused me to bring out both cameras today to retest. BMCC: T1+ each ND individually; 0.3, 0.6, 0.9 all great, T1 + 1.2ND still ok, T1 + 1.5ND still ok, T1 + 2.1ND IR is back a little, T1+2.7ND IR is there. The tiffen filters are 77mm and on the pocket the T1 seems to handle the IR up to 1.2/1.5ND so those filters will be dedicated to the Pocket. The BMCC has a Mat Box so I'll be buying an IRND solution for that, can't keep swapping those 77mm all day and ignoring the mat box. After much research I'm going to try the Skier 4 x 565 Hot Mirror 1.2 ND on BMCC and add extra ND if needed on the lens until I can afford more 4x565's.
2. I have the 10-22mm zoom and the aperture is not working yet, update 1.3
3. Hi Andrew, do you think there's much of a future for the EF BMCC? Do the other mounts ie. E or MFT have the same FFD problems between lenses? I'm asking this because my wides, tokina 11-16 & canon 10-22 don't quite hit infinity below f4 below about 14mmm. If I'm not using cine glass should I get this adjusted? Would you?
4. Great review Andrew, I had given up the idea of owning this camera but now its back in mind. I've almost pulled the trigger on a 5D MKIII as I own a few EF/EF-S lenses but I just can't justify the video image for the same price (roughly) as the BMCC. I'm already invested in Mac's for recording so I'm thinking of building a Hackintosh. http://nofilmschool.com/build-a-hackintosh/ Finding a reasonably priced 10bit screen will be another investment. Holding onto my money at the moment. Looking forward to more on the BMCC.
5. I feel like a Canon junkie on a drip feed. I think Canon think they have all major markets kind of sussed out, does that mean indie film makers are a minority? Its a real slap in the face putting a camera out with no 25p, what? That says to me they begrudgingly put 25p in some of their cameras? I don't understand the explanation or reason given for that either. Can't wait for next years new camera rumours from other brands.
6. Did we ever find out about the AA filter? How does moire compare to the MKIII?
7. Good interview, I think it touches on all the important questions for EF owners. Shutter angle how old school. Is there a warranty on the shutter? Time for a refresh on shutter angle's... 8. Interesting, I hadn't noticed how green that shot was from Genius. Reminds me of my room which has subtle green pigment in the cream paint and lit with fluro gives it that green pastey look. Auto WB or custom WB should fix that so I put it down to a creative decision. The juggler green look is something else. A light over head not matching the WB? Not saying its wrong be surprised if it was camera error.
9. If there wasn't any moire or at least a promise to fix, I'd be considering this camera. I want to ditch my canon because I don't want moire any more aye. The footage looks nice but I'm a tad disappointed. (I've always wanted to use the word tad) I'd happily pay more for this camera to be better considering the competition. Nice shootin, testing of the DOF, slow mo was cool, close ups on Pocahontas to check skin tone wud have been nice ;-)
10. They are hoping the GH3 gets good sales so they can move the DSLR division into Canon territory. I believe you can't have both stills and video without sacrifices and of course these companies are driven by the Assumption that stills will rule in the future. They won't. Except for Pros and semi-pro photographers. Entertainment is moving pictures not sitting looking at stills... lol. Who sits there looking at stills? I don't, unless I'm showing off my own and showing them off to other shooters. ;-) Anyway.... We need a boutique company to create a DSLR kiss ass Video camera. These guys aren't going to do it without sacrificing stills. What say you? I don't need a stills camera...lol Gimme a good Video camera for under 3K for crying out loud! Edit: Forgot to thank Andrew for the great interview.
11. Lets hope & keep our fingers crossed Panny are listening to the video/film market, I'm dying to get rid of my canon. I'm holding off, but I don't see any other direction to head. I like what BMD are doing, we need more boutique companies like this to cater for the video/film niche market. Then there's this: An interesting news comes via Handelsblatt (Translation here / via SKF). 12. @KarimNassar Got to agree with you on that. Its also great to see high profile cinematographers shoot sweet looking video but without knowing all the tech behind the shoot we don't know what sort of animal we are dealing with. Need to compare apples with apples. I too am looking forward to how the Sony A99 & VG900 shape up. I wonder who will be the first to bring out a lower priced FF video camera. Canon have played their cards with the C100/C300 and all the jizz in the P&S range and the fazing out of the Mark II and putting out the 6D which are mainly stills cameras that shoot pretty good video. My needs are video more than stills. So far the Panny is looking sweet and would fit straight into my needs. The BMC looks great too but I'd need to spend big to make it all worthwhile. Perhaps next year for that one.
13. I'm ditching my 60D by the end of the year. I got plenty of EF-S glass that will either be sold off or used depending which way I go. It's been an interesting and steep learning curve finding out I'm more into video than stills. If the quality is there with the GH3 and it flies off the shelves that will cause a 6D price drop. There's also the BMC & the VG900 they will be enticing to enthusiasts (like me) who want to stretch for better quality. Looking forward to more hands on reviews with the Panny. Stills are of lessor importance to me than video. I'd be much happier with a raw shootin pocket camera than dragging around a DSLR & lenses. Its a good move with the Wifi & GPS, 'Got to keep up with the jones's'. Often I'd be out with my 60D, take some shots and want to share them straight up. Ended up pulling out my iphone instead with instant sharing and GPS Tags... LOL Go home and forget about the shots on the DSLR. So a camera that shoots raw/jpg with Wifi & GPS is fine by me! Still prefer a pocket size for that though. But thats me I don't do this for a living, some of you guys/gals might. For me its to put some visuals to music that I write. Love this site Btw. So much to learn
