The folÂlowÂing steps can be used to upgrade LightÂroom 1, LightÂroom 2 or LightÂroom 3, as well as LightÂroom 4 Beta catalogs.
Step 1. DownÂload and Install LightÂroom 4
Step 2. On your Mac’s finder, find the locaÂtion of your LightÂroom 3 catalog. It should look someÂthing like name.lrcat

Step 3. Right click on that file and select “open with Adobe PhoÂtoÂshop LightÂroom 4″

Step 4. You should see the “LightÂroom CatÂaÂlog Upgrade†diaÂlog. Be very careÂful with this step. CatÂaÂlog names can NOT be changed later. I strongly sugÂgest you click on “change†and deterÂmine the best locaÂtion and name for your upgraded catalog.

As you can see I creÂated a new FOLDER (EAP_LR4_Laptop) and a new CATALOG name EAP_LR4_Laptop.

You might be wonÂderÂing why I picked this namÂing strucÂture. SimÂple:
EAP stands for Eduardo Angel PhoÂtogÂraÂphy
LR4 is obviÂously LightÂroom 4
And LapÂtop is the locaÂtion of the CatÂaÂlog, the place where all my LightÂroom setÂtings (keyÂwords, preÂsets, preÂviews, plug-ins, etc) will be stored. This is espeÂcially imporÂtant if you often shoot on locaÂtion and need to sync temÂpoÂrary catÂaÂlogs to your perÂmaÂnent catÂaÂlog. See our preÂviÂous post with step-by-step instrucÂtions on how to do this.
Step 5. Ready? Jump! Hit “CreÂate†and then “Upgradeâ€

Keep in mind that LightÂroom will creÂate a NEW catÂaÂlog inside the new folder we just creÂated. The old preÂviews will me moved to the new locaÂtion but the old LightÂroom 3 CatÂaÂlog will still exist in your sysÂtem. I recÂomÂmend keepÂing this file for a couÂple of weeks until you have conÂfirmed that all the images and setÂtings were upgraded correctly.

Time for a quick cofÂfee break. DependÂing on your sysÂtem specs, how many images you have, the file sizes, preÂsets etc, the upgrade can take sevÂeral minÂutes. I have over 50,000 RAW files and 600 preÂsets, and the upgrade took less than 4 minÂutes.
Step 6. We are almost there. You now see the “Enable reverse geocodÂing†diaÂlog, which is basiÂcally askÂing for perÂmiÂsion to access Google Maps. Even though I am NOT happy with Google’s recent priÂvacy polÂicy changes, I recÂomÂmend enabling this feaÂture so you can use the brand new Map ModÂule.

If later on you regret feedÂing Big Brother more inforÂmaÂtion, you can disÂable this feaÂture under the “MetaÂdata†tab of the “CatÂaÂlog SetÂtings†Dialog.
Step 7. Done! We have sucÂcessÂfully upgraded our LightÂroom 3 catÂaÂlog into a brand new LightÂroom 4 catalog.

One last thing to conÂsider: Any new changes done in LightÂroom 4 will not be availÂable in preÂviÂous verÂsions of LightÂroom. What this means is, if you are in the midÂdle of a project, finÂish it in LightÂroom 3 and then do the upgrade. Now is time to play.
