HOT! Canon developing 4K RAW video format

Canon are developing their own RAW codec for 2K and 4K video. In a patent filed in July 2010 and published yesterday, Canon describe a codec which stores raw sensor data from a 12bit high resolution RGB sensor with Bayer colour filter array.

Wish Nikon were this clued up about HDSLR video. Hopefully RAW video on DSLR form factor in 2013 then. Great if it was sooner, not likely though.

Hot, indeed. I dont think that Canon will put this into a DSLR this year (it would almost completely kill the C300) but this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

I wouldn't be at all surprised if Canon updated the C300 to support 4K and higher bit rates as well as raw. They may have released it as a 1080p, 8-bit camera to get it out the door while they developed these improvements rather than waiting a year to release a large-sensor video camera.

They can't update the C300. The sensor isn't capable of 4K. Yes it is a 4K sensor but the pixels resolve colour (red, blue, green) and when combined without interpolation produce perfect 1080p.

It is designed for that, and not 4K.

No firmware / codec issue can turn it into a 4K video feed.

The C300 is a very good 2k video camera. Having 4k video doesnt automatically make it better than one with 2k even though there are some advantage in cropping, help with stabilization or add shakes in editing. Therefore it is entirely plausible in the near future you have bad 4k video tagged on a several hundred S mobile device that couldnt hold a candle to the video even on the old 5DMkII.

The Canon RAW patent has been filed since the middle of 2010. Most patents should it becomes a reality takes about 2-3 years so their concept video dSLR do fit into that time frame.
